Arthur hit the nail on the head about the spinner. It's what I've been banging on about for years now, but instead of a quality overseas spinner we keep signing opening batsmen. Maharaj took 6 wickets for Yorks today to win them the game... there was no chance of Notts batting out the day... 4 of those wickets came in the last 7 overs of play, so once he had them he finished them off quickly.

The Capt and I have discussed endlessly why promotion might actually be a very bad thing for us. I have no doubt that we worked hard and toiled away for the whole match and after the start we had to the season it's very encouraging to see us being highly competitive again, but this match brought our limitations out into the cold light of day for all to see. This side has the makings of being a very good div 2 side, but we would get thrashed all season long in div 1 and I'm not sure that would help player development at all.

Still...... a good effort from us and a very good effort from Leics to deny us what looked being like a run of the mill victory half way through day 3

crikey... next season, who would we have?

1. Lees
2. Robson/Steel
3. Steel/Robson/Harte
4. Harte/Steel
5. Burnham
6. Trevaskis/Steel
7. Eckersley
8. Raine
9. Carse
10. Rimmington/Potts/Salisbury/Weighell
11. Rushworth

that might very well do for div 2, but it looks threadbare for div 1

Agreed. There are plenty of reasons for optimism but also limitations that, as you say , would be fatal in div 1.

Yep. The younger batsmen might be ok with a little more experience but right now only Lees and probably Eckersley would be good enough. Similar story with the bowlers. I still hope we might get Bancroft back next year - might be available next week.

again it's something I've been banging on about for years, but our OS player for the first half of the season should be a big snarling fast bowler and the for second half a wily, nuggety old spinner..... a Ravi Ashwin type

Badger must be due a contract renewal at the end of the season... I'm sure he was on a 3 year deal. I wouldn't have Stonemercenary back, but I could be persuaded to give Borthdick a second chance. That would ease things at the top of the order

Yep. Borthwick would be good! Definitely a great case for a fast bowler in those early season conditions.

That will be interesting. He's done enough to merit a new deal but with our change of coaching staff could he fancy a sentimental journey back home!
Think he might fancy another spell in division one though.

Gloucs won, I see

looking at the number of overs bowled by Derby's attack, it looks as though a deal was done

I hate contrived results.... just get on with the *modded* game

Now that Archer is fast boy flavour of the year, we might get Woody back a bit more next year.... if he can stay injury free, of course. England have 2 sets of 3 match test series in May and July I think, so he might be around for the 7 or 8 April and May matches that are likely to be scheduled. That would help us out... we might even get away with a half season OS batsman

Got to be a doubt over how much fc cricket Wood can play.

Which Steel are have you included or is it both? The argument for the overseas men to be bowlers is logical(Patel showed the effectiveness of a spinner late season) but it does leave the batting threadbare as the above selection shows. Given the recent departures, including 2 spinners, we have to assume that we have both an overseas plus another proven import(Kolpaks or domestic) budgeted for and lined up. Bangers should available most of the season(Aussies only have a 3 week white ball tournament here in July). Both Steel's should be proven red ball assets next year.
Not so sure Rimmers will be here next season given that he'll be 37 and there's been no mention of a renewal.

So

Bangers
Lees
C.Steel
Harte
Burnham
S.Steel
A.N. Other(all rounder)
Eckersley
Raine
Carse
Rushworth

Looking at England's schedule next season, published today, can't see Woody(if, when fit) playing for Durham.Plus he'll be an in-demand hundred choice.

Didn't Durham have a Pakistan international spinner for a time maybe last season (I'm not thinking of Pakistan born Tahir). Got a feeling it was early season.

Might be imagining it.

Aksher Patel, late season, whom I mentioned in my earlier post. Indian ODI.
