I didn't want Borthwick back... imagine inviting back someone, who had jumped ship when loyalty was of paramount importance, following a succession of hugely underwhelming seasons, then offering the captaincy to the busted flush to sweeten the deal..... bonkers

we had to make do with what we had left for several years, and now that we don't have to, we're going backwards...... despite a hugely promising batsman who showed us the kind of loyalty that the captain didn't.

With this kind of leadership the only thing I have to console myself with is that at least the club bottom of div 2, which I think we will be by the end of tomorrow, can't fall any further

I'm not foolish enough to predict/expect it but ,if the pitch stays flat, they will rarely have a better chance of securing a backs to the wall draw, or at least take the game deep into the final day.
Getting blown away by Notts in the last innings was always on the cards but it shouldn't be here given the difference in quality between the two attacks.

Other thing is that the batting was fine in the first 2 games, came unstuck twice against a very good attack and then inexplicably imploded here - a solid start and then good recovery but the problem was losing the entire top order in half a session of madness.
So there may be hope with the bat if they can apply themselves. Big if!

What I don't understand is why the bowling has been so poor. We know they can be less effective with an older ball when there's no pace option but they suddenly have become totally ineffective with the new and old ball. I can't figure that out at all.

Amazing from Dickson, last year of his contract but he has already surely done enough to get a new one. He looked like a very poor signing in 2020 but has shown his worth since.
One thing about this opening stahd is there can be no excuses now for not saving the game -but we'd still be foolish to feel confident about that!

Yes, think that is the issue. Petersen hasn't settied yet, Borthwick is struggling and Eckersley has been in even worse form. Hopefully tomorrow will give them an opportunity to rectify that - unless the two openers bat all day

It can't have been down to the pitch, because we won the toss and chose to bat and looking at the scores that was the correct call
