Godleman has 50 and Emmerson says his previous best this year was 17. Seem to remember a century for him last year - although we won the game.
Perhaps the new strategy is to concede a huge first innings total and then win after following on!

No century this time. Dixon has finally taken a wicket. Not sure what Wood is up, he's bound to be undercooked but an international bowler should be able to get wickets against division 2 sides even when under par. He was also ineffective last year if I remember rightly.

second match in a row that we've opted to bowl first, only to concede a big first innings score.

correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the usual convention to only bowl first if you expect to bowl them out cheaply?

perhaps we do expect it

in which case we are deluded

perhaps we opt to bowl because we are terrified of being rolled over by lunch on day 1 if we bat first?

that seems more likely

I remember when Big Luke went to another county (might have been Northants), and a poster on what was probably 606 expressed the view that he'd been 'produced by Durham, so he must be good'

that seems like a long time ago

the Durham production line seems to have been relocated to Mumbai to save on labour costs

perhaps that's what our former Indian investors were after all along?

I suppose it could be that he thinks the attack is so weak that the best/only chance is to bowl first and hope the new ball pitch on day 1 gives some assistance.
Or as you suggest it could be overconfidence - then again these last two batting sides have looked weak so I can see why he'd expect to do well.
I read an article about Derbyshire having a strong attack ...so maybe it is down to not wanting to bat.

I wasn't suggesting over confidence.... there is nothing about this, or last, season which should promote any sort of confidence.

But, yes....I do think we are choosing the least worst option whenever possible

I think the younger bowlers all have potential but they're injury prone and don't have a potent and experienced strike bowler to make it easier for them.
Rushworth looked to have rolled back the years on Monday but I wonder if the groin injury was just unfortunate or caused by him summoning up the effort in that particular situation. He used to be able to do it day in and day out - not anymore.
I think I'd point the fingers at the coach - it was obvious the squad needed significant strengthening and , after deciding not to come to terms with Onions, his response was to sign a 33 year old medium pacer who , on the evidence so far , is definitely not a strike bowler.
