After a good start to our second innings, Adams manages to get himself out on the stroke of lunch.

Well done Carberry, another poor return. You begin to get the impression that some of these guys don't really care enough to try and turn Hants current misfortunes around. Carberry is probably still sulking about not being picked for England last season!

If Gatting is a straight swap for Ervine, then someone else will have to make way for Vince. Dawson or Terry most likely, but it's not unthinkable that it might be Briggs, given that Dawson picked up two wickets in the Somerset match, compared to Briggs' one.

That said, no team who picks Terry, Dawson AND Gatting all in their line-up should be allowed to call themselves a D1 team.

Mind you Terry and Gatting have shown up a few of the supposed better players in this game.

It's not a coincidence that the only game we win is the only game which Vince turns up in.

We can only hope that Gatting and Terry's 50s in this game give Vince, Carberry and Adams the kick up the backsides which they all badly require. It's not like they're not good enough. They're just grossly under performing.

Next week against Worcs is huge.

Dawson being sent out on a month loan to Essex for all formats. Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to think that means he'll be ineligible to play for us in any format except FC when he returns?

Not sure what I thought when I saw that Dawson was going out on loan. Certainly out of nick, but so are many others. Down to the bare bones it seems with Ervine's injury and so many out of touch so not quite sure in the logic of this decision. Heard mention that there are a few people in the seconds currently ahead of Dawson in the pecking order. Is this reference to Gatting and Terry or are there others out there showing promise that we may see in the first team shortly?

From a FC point of view, I'm all for it. Give Dawson a chance to find some form, and if he continues to fail well he's failing for a different team! But I think his comments about wanting first team cricket are a bit rich. Prior to this week's game against Middlesex, he had played in 7 of our 8 D1 games. So how on earth he can complain about lack of cricket, I don't know. We've given him enough chances this season. He can hardly complain at us finally giving Terry and Gatting a go in his place now.

But with Ervine injured, I'd still rather we were picking Dawson as replacement in t20 as opposed to Gatting. (At the very least, can we at least have Adams back in at 3 tomorrow. Gatting and the powerplay don't really go together in my book)

It's a shame that two of Essex's final three t20 games are against Middlesex. I was hoping that if he goes and helps them in t20, then he'd at least be hurting one of our other top four rivals at the same time. But alas not. That said, they might not actually pick him for t20. They are on good form at the moment.

Very interesting night ahead tomorrow. If we lose to Glamorgan and Surrey beat Middlesex, we probably drop as low as 7th (given also that Somerset and Gloucs play each other, and they're both within two points of us and with better NRRs). On the other hand, if we beat Glamorgan and Sussex beat Kent, we could jump back up to 2nd. Just shows how tight the group is, and how important tomorrow's matches are.

Either way, we'll have a game in hand on Sussex, Essex, Glamorgan and Gloucs. And that could prove vital.

Yep, and the North group is even tighter with only 6 points separating top and bottom.

Dawson is unfortunately yet another example of one of our promising young guys who just hasn't kicked on. He's been in the first team in all formats for the last five (?) years, but I'm struggling to think of any real match winning contributions - maybe others can. It may be harsh, but it feels as if he's been carried in a successful one day team and hidden in midiocracy in the FC side. I'm not holding my breath on a great transformation, which is really sad. Same as Griff.
