Yep, he'd have made a fortune. Amazing he's not yet 40.

Colly on Twitter is giving the Northumberland Tyneside senior league some harsh criticism - looks as if Durham wanted Woody to play a game this weekend but the rules don't allow it! He seems to be furious.

Colly needs to keep his neb out. Presumably Woody wanted to play for Ashington. It would be wholly unfair to other teams, particularly Ashington's opponents this weekend. As far as I'm aware any Durham player is eligible to play for the academy on a one off basis. Certainly remember Pudsey
doing so when an established player.

Yes, his comments suggest Wood wanted to play for Ashington. I must admit I'm clueless about club cricket rules and regulations but Colly seems to be saying there's a longstanding disagreement between clubs over the rules - with some voting for changes and others in favour of the status quo.

Is Mark Wood actually registered to play for Ashington (or for another team in the league) this year?

If it's a case of Ashington wanting to register the player now, then the league is quite right to decline.

All of the Durham staff are normally registered to play for one of the 11 NEPL teams other than the Academy. Wood, of course, is centrally contracted to ECB and only loaned back to Durham. Ashington already have their one permitted pro-namely Ben Harmison.
I have some sympathy for Wood. He's certainly a bone fide member of Ashington and regularly involves himself coaching kids voluntarily.

Apparently whatever ruling is not letting Wood play used to also be in place in the Lancashire leagues until the ruling was altered. David Lloyd mentioned it when he was agreeing with Colly's criticism. I suppose the frustration will be that Wood playing could be regarded as being in the wider interests of English cricket.

Has the NEPL said anything in regarding to why Mark Wood is not allowed to play this weekend?

Reading between the lines it seems Mark Wood is not on a list of registrations and Ashington have tried to get him on board for Saturday. I imagine league officials have declined the registration request because a registration deadline has passed.

I think Colly might have a bee in his bonnet with The NTSL apparently he rucked up the other week to play for Shotley Bridge in a semi final of one of those midweek 20 over comps against Swalwell the other week which caused a bit of ill feeling on the night.
I agree with Westoelad if Wood could do with a one off club match he should play for the Academy. It would be a massive lift for those lads especially at this time of the season with injuries and England u19 and u17 commitments they have been playing with a side full of 15/16 year olds and have taken a couple of hidings. Also its a far higher standard of club cricket.

I think you're right. Colly's comments seemed to reflect a more general annoyance with the NTSL rather than just being about Wood.
Playing for the Academy would seem like the sensible thing to do so.

Some clarification here. If Mark was only going to bat and field this shows the NTSL in a pretty insular light.

Other thing with Colly is that The Guardian and a couple of other papers have reported he has already agreed a deal for next year - it'd be a surprise if that wasn't the case so why hasn't it been officially confirmed ? If I remember rightly everyone pretty much knew he was going to sign an extension last year but Durham only announced it when the bad news about Rocky or Scott ( can't remember which one ) was confirmed.

Makes me wonder if they're going to use the same tactic this year - are they expecting Coggers and/or Jennings to jump ship and holding back announcing Colly's deal so they can try and put out some good news at the same time as bad news!

Incredible. It certainly explains why Colly is annoyed and also why Woody can't play for the Academy-although surely the relevant authorities there should have shown some flexibility.

If he was only going to bat and field it must also suggest he's still some way off a Durham return?

Ben Harmison is not the pro at Ashington .Their registered pro could not get a visa and didn't turn up.
