Perhaps they were staying deliberately non-committal in case a Short or similar became available

I was also surprised we didn't bat. 6 down now but Barnard has been scoring runs down the order this year - need him out before he settles.

I haven't checked the scorecards yet, but I note that we continue to throw away night watchmen wickets. Potts had nearly 5 overs to survive, but managed only 2 balls and Bedders was in anyway
