Will you be pleased to have him back? Seemed to struggle badly at Middlesex but still a talented player.

I don't blame them TBH. He hasn't lived up to his early promise.

He may prove us all wrong though.

He has to be an upgrade on Harmison if he bats at no3, even if he does not recapture his his early form.

Denly could have made it in tests, but England destroyed whatever was there. I remember the 2009 season, people were calling for his name into the team, and having watched him I was in agreement. Was a lovely stroke maker, maybe a little weak outside the off stump "a la Sam Robson", but he was 22 or 23 at the time.

Then the selectors who obviously found his name somewhere at the top of the "batting averages excel spreadsheet" they were looking at thought it would be a great thing to pick him for the ODI team, even though he was the most pedestrian of OD openers in England. They suitably billed him as our next Sehwag, not helped by the fact that I think the first time he got over a SR of 70 for the season was a week before the ODI when he scored a SR85-90ish 100 vs Warwickshire.

Anyone that had seen him in county knew he would get killed in ODI cricket, and suitably he did, especially when he was the expected aggressive stroke maker.

Just to make sure they finished whatever confidence the poor lad had left, they sent him to the T20 team, which was an embarrassment.

Could have been a very good opening bat for England in tests..... another lost soul of Flowers England

Ludicrous surely-he fits in playing for Sussex only when it doesn't clash with him making a fortune playing in T20 tournaments across the globe. I am sure there be a loyal journeyman Sussex cricketer who would be a much more deserved recipient.

I agree, we gave Dimi Mascarenhas a benefit in 2007, then the following year he went to the IPL, had he been at the IPL first, he probably wouldn't of got one.

Luke has become a top FC player, averaged well over 50 in his last 20-25 FC matches, and arguably the best English domestic OD cricketer you could hope to have. Always given his all for the club when he was about, unlike another England player who will be crawling back this season, and who bats for Sussex like its an insult to his ability that he has to surround himself with the low guys of county cricket.

Maybe Chris Nash will be disappointed, but he will get one soon enough.

It also has the added bonus of maybe having Luke being at Hove more.

I'm certainly not questioning Luke's playing ability-I recognise that he had a magnificent season in all forms. What I am questioning is the principle of awarding benefits to players whose priority is not playing for their county-either as T20 global mercenaries or centrally contacted for England.
