I like net session. They have been very beneficial to me.

A change of bowling style was prompted, just went running in trying to bowl as fast as possible which yielded in better results (an edge behind and hit middle stump) in amongst some wayward filth.

How much is the total count of clubcricketers in your club ? Surprised to read only 3 had interest this week.

Official club nets don't begin until March. A few of us in the 2nd xi wanted to hit the ground running early and knock in some new bats, so I took the iniative to book an indoor lane at a local cricket club.

From memory there are 43 players registered across two teams. Though 17 of those players are available to play most match days, 7 players half a season and the rest a few matches here and there. There were times both 1sts and 2nds fielded less than 11 players, very difficult to win a game. A shame really because the 1st team narrowly missed out on promotion to Group B in 2013 and only avoided relegation to Group D in 2014 with one new team entering the league this year in that group.

Word spreads about the unofficial off-season nets and had two prospective players wanting to attend, only not to turn up. Two current players expressed their interest in attending and have yet to show up. One player who turned up from last week (and was very keen for off-season nets) got into a strop for an unknown reason and didn't turn up yesterday.

Ideally I want numbers limited for a 1 hour lane (minimum of 4, maximum of 6) so all players can get a decent bat in. Any more and a 2nd lane is needed to ensure all players get time to bat.

I hate bowling in nets, purely to the lack of space and distractions. Doesn't help when we currently net in a multi purpose hallway with 4 lanes crammed in.

space isnt the issue for me, we have 6 nets at our indoor facility which is obviously a boost.....

the reason i don't find it beneficial, is because you cant replicate the intensity and conditions, that you will face in a match... i will happily net for 2 hours every day of the week, but i dont get a whole lot out of it..

Oh yes CF, a completely different ball game once you enter the square.

Three things I hate about cricket - the off season longer than the actual season, you can't hone your cricket skills alone and the delayed onset muscle soreness that occurs after pre-season nets.

I guess by one lane you mean one net. The practice at our club is that about 5-6 bowlers bowl in one net. We have 4 wickets for netting and another 3 for actual matches and our count is high so we have to plan bowling/fielding/batting during nets according to the number of cricketers present on a given day. So that gives only 5 seconds rest for the batsman between the deliveries. I agree it is wise to be flexible about the plans during net sessions.

Indoor nets been and gone. Outdoor nets started this week (I christened it by getting smacked on the ankle bone by slow yorker I missed, whilst being watched by Flower). And tomorrow's friendly is cancelled because the pitch isn't ready.
