Might be a different level to what I played at? Obviously some league players will wear them. Or village players do don the helmet these days? Can't say I blame them.

I had a friend who had a few trials at county teams and who was clocked in the low 80's, high 70's. In the nets we would use a friends motorbike helmet when batting to him because on some pitches the ball would take off on the uneven surface, and at that pace you wanted protection. He hit someone on the helmet once and cracked it, and after that we all bought helmets. I thought if even a quick club youngster can destroy a motorbike helmet in one hit, then my teeth or nose might not fare well.

It was common around that time to wear a helmet in club cricket.

Schoolkids have to wear them. Remember the 16 year old Parthiv Patel playing for India at Trent Bridge. If he had wanted to bat without a helmet, he would have needed a letter from his parents...

That's a new rule. Again, we never wore them. It does make sense though.

Should be compulsory at all levels of cricket.

You wouldn't go out in the middle without leg pads so why go without a helmet?

Needless to say a tragic incident, I hope those affected can get through this.

Like cricketfan90 I don't wear a helmet. No need to at village level cricket where short bowling rarely exists and bowling speeds don't get much higher than 60-65mph. Might get the odd delivery that pops up off a length, but the key is to not play shots early and keep your eye on the ball.

This current round of Shield matches have been abandoned, with each match being declared a draw.

Yes it is. It's all over the Oz media.

I was meaning new developments rather than more reflection. But it does seem the hospital has made a statement now. They did previously suggest no likely changes for 48 hours.

He's still in intensive care.

It will probably take a few days to make some kind of assessment.

It's a waiting game now but hopefully he'll pull through.
