It'll be a shame if he can't find another FC county, though time is on his side.

Sadly Minor Counties is probably more his level when it comes to his batting.

20 years ago he would probably have been Hants first choice keeper for many years.

That is true...it remains to be seen if he can swing the ball in English conditions.

Andre Adams is a doubt for the opening game of the season. Subject to whether Bird will be here in time (I understand that the Aus domestic season finished last week, but something in my mind is telling me that Bird wont be available for us until week two of the season - not that I can now find any proof of that, mind), that could leave us with an attack of Tomlinson, Wood, Berg, Ervine, Briggs and Dawson. Not exactly D1 quality.

I would have thrown Tom Barber's name in there too, because he has seen a fair bit of pre-season action so far. But he's not in the squad for the three day friendly starting tomorrow, so that surely rules him out of playing in the opening game.

Yes it is, I've just checked.

I also notice they've done a U-turn on the IOW fixture.

Not really a U-turn. We said that it was a possibility, with talks on-going. At no point was anything agreed or confirmed. The final decision was no.

It speaks volumes about the state of the modern game when one of the best glovemen England has produced in the last decade can't even get a bearth in a County side.

A good day for the top order today (bar Adams) and big hundreds for both Carberry and Vince.

Good to see Dawson making some early season runs as well.

But is also says a lot about Bates' batting. Unless he has had offers but turned them down (eg personal reasons, not wanting to move up north etc), then that's 18 counties who have looked at his batting and said no.
