BBQ Cup, 2015/16

Postby from_the_stands » Mon Sep 21, 2015 10:37 pm

The domestic one day comp will be staged in Sydney this year, with Western Australia looking to defend their title. A seventh team joins proceedings this year, with a CA XI taking the field. Each team will play each other once, for a total of 6 matches each, then semis and the final. Squads are about to be announced, with Queensland having done so already. Chris Lynn will skipper the side in the absence of Usman Khawaja. Josh Hazlewood will be named in the NSW squad despite being rested.

My top 4;

Victoria
New South Wales
Western Australia
Queensland

Is this the Big Bash or a different comp?

Big Bash is a T20 competition isn't it with franchised teams? Sort of Australia's IPL?

This must be a domestic state competition?

I thought it would be T20 because the games are all in Sydney. 50 overs a game is a lot of cricket for one ground to cope with unless there are other grounds in Sydney to play on.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

I think there are, hope

Who'd be a member of any of the other state sides?

5 home shield matches and few bits of hit and giggle.... just as well the Aussie dollar is a worthless currency, because you'd get no value for it from cricket.

I can almost hear Vaughan, Swann and Lloyd salivating over the prospect of only having to play 10 shield matches and no travelling for anything else. Pretty soon all 3 will be promoting this for county cricket

This starts in around 2 weeks, with matches being played on various grounds in Sydney. The final will be played at the SCG.

Or 4 home matches if you support New South Wales as the 5th game is to be played in New Zealand.

The Australian domestic season barely allows those on the fringes of test cricket to play red ball cricket. Just one match before the New Zealand series start, 3 more games before the West Indies. Then as the Sheffield Shield resumes, only one more match before the return series against New Zealand.

5 matches at most for a fringe player to earn a Baggy Green, one match at most for a current international to hone their red ball game. Players don't need rest, recovery and preparation, they need game time.

I'd say that Australia's record over the years would strongly disagree with such statements.

Problem Australia currently have is finding future test batsmen. Debutants in recent years mainly have a FC average close to 40 but over 30 years of age, or players in their twenties but with a FC average of 30-32. The retention rate for new Australia batsmen is on a par with an England opening batting partner for Alastair Cook.

Because of the way the domestic schedule is structured, there are few opportunities for that batsman to get a run of Shield cricket in. A player released from the Bangladesh test squad might get a run of 5 Shield Matches to stake a claim for the West Indies test, but the incoming player for the New Zealand test will have played one Shield Match. A player released from the New Zealand test squad (or West Indies) won't be able to get any red ball cricket in until February because the Big Bash season begins and just one match to stake a claim for the return New Zealand test series.

This has gotten underway in Sydney, with 3 matches taking place.

Queensland are batting against Tasmania. No Khawaja for Queensland. Burns out for a golden.

WA will be battibg against SA.

NSW are batting against CAXI. No Twatto for NSW.
