Certainly appears to be precedent to the best of my knowledge so it's difficult to imagine that the decision wasn't made without the umpires seeking clarification from a higher authority particularly in such a high profile game It's good that it's been flagged up and can't believe that Lewis' previous wasn't instrumental in the authorities reaching this decision.

I'm wondering if a coach should be able to incur a run penalty? Sure change the ball. Shouldn't run scoring be the province of the players on the field.

So a coach,or anyone else connected with the team, can interfere with the ball without penalty?
I assume this is the same Mick Lewis(Australia,Victoria and Durham) who was involved in ball tampering as a player.

The same Mick Lewis.

The same one who, I am quite sure, still possesses the worst set of bowling figures in ODI history.
I don't remember his history of ball tampering. Can you tell me about it, Westoe?

I heard this talked about on the radio, but didn't hear it too well. Jim Maxwell made a reference to "the first time, it's a warning", making me think that it was the second time the team was caught tampering.

I have always thought the five run penalty to be woefully inadequate, and any other sanction against Lewis would come after the game and therefore too late. I'd like see Lewis banned from the venue for the rest of the match as well.
Maybe

No mention of ball tampering in his cricinfo profile but it occured in between his seasons with Durham i.e. 2005-06.
Certainly held the worst ODI bowling figures but whether it still holds with the present high scoring rates is problematic.

Cheers. Didn't hear of it.

Seems that maybe it is a Victorian thing. Finch was found to be ball tampering 5 or so years back, and Saker was charged about 10 years back, but there wasn't enough evidence to convict.

Footage, not overly conclusive, here: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/cricket/sheffield-shield-final-victoria-penalised-for-ball-tampering-against-south-australia/news-story/91f892044c30753b7a4cd13d82616ddb

Lewis.plead guilty and was given a $2000 fine.

small change, if they win the Shield. SA were going along nicely before the incident and lost 4/20-ish afterwards.

Small change indeed if the rewards are anything like the County championship where the winning team share £350,000.

is that it, $2k?

barely the price of half a dozen pizza's in Australia

no ban, no points, nothing else?

seems extraordinarily lenient. If he'd placed a $1 bet on any aspect of the game, they'd have thrown the book at him

The ball was changed in the 12th over and SA lost their first in the 19th, The 4 quick wickets happened after the 36th over. Hard to see any connection with the incident.

Anyway, back to the cricket, the Bushrangers look to be heading for a win on the 5th day. :clap

Make the penalty a points deduction and that would curtail the practise.

OK, fair enough - I was getting comment from the Adelaide Advertiser, so they would be slanted in the one direction...

However, for all non-Victorian cricket followers - and plenty of Victorian ones, I am sure - it will be a tainted victory. Considering his guilty plea, Cricket Victoria would do well to not renew his contract.

Having done a little reading about Lewis' past indiscretions as a player, had to have a chuckle when he used the following as a defence back in 2005, ""We wouldn't be so stupid as to do something illegal when we know the cameras are on us."
"It was my opinion it is up to me if I want to justify it or not" - Bhaveshgor
