Vijay Hazare Trophy final

Postby greyblazer » Thu Dec 31, 2015 6:32 pm

While doing commentary for the Vijay Hazare Trophy final (50-over tournament) between Gujarat and Delhi, watched Jasprit Bumrah bowl. I always thought of him as a run-of-the-mill medium pacer, who bowled with an awkward action. However, in the final, I was surprised by his pace and his ability to trouble the batsmen with his bouncers/yorkers. Loved the double bluff against Ishant Sharma. He had a FSL in place for Ishant and then bowled a crackerjack yorker to send the off-stump cartwheeling. Parthiv Patel seems to get the best out of him.

Parthiv himself played with a lot of maturity to compile his first List A ton. RP Singh swung the new ball prodigiously to cause early damage. Gautam Gambhir again poked at deliveries outside off on numerous occasions and fell to RP. Unmukt Chand seemed to be all over the place when he attempted to drive through the off-side. Shikhar Dhawan looked clueless. Wonderful bowling by the trio of Rush Kalaria, RP and Bumrah. They consistently bowled with an upright seam. In the end, it was good to see Gujarat upsetting the apple-cart and Parthiv lifting the trophy :)

Sometimes, the batsman make the bowlers look much better than they actually are :-)
Although i didn't see the match, I concluded that based on your summary. RP Singh, Gambhir are well past it. Dhawan is out of form. Sad to see Unmukt lose his way after promising so much early on.

At the international level, you need to bowl consistently at 145K, with an upright seam, and be accurate to be successful. A lot of Indian bowlers start well but cannot maintain the consistency. Hope Bumrah bucks that trend.

Wishing you a happy new year GB !

Happy New Year to you as well. RP was bowling at medium pace, but he did swing the new ball. Chand looks imperious every time someone drifts it down the leg-side. However, looks all over the place when a pacer invites him to drive outside off.

I don't know what to make of Bumrah. Now, did he bowl quicker than what he usually does? However, on that day he was very good. If he keeps bowling like that Bumrah can turn out to be a very useful bowler in the slog overs.

A month back, Parthiv notched up his first List A ton. Now, he registers his second in the Deodhar Trophy!
