Sun running story that 2 gay men have confirmed to the police that Stokes was defending them from two men who were threatening them and giving them homophobic abuse. https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/4784329/b ... thugs/amp/

Two year contracts for seam bowlers in their mid-thirties suddenly not a problem, it seems....

Yep. Has the feeling of yet again going for a cheaper option. He sounds like a good player but not sure if he's someone who can lead an attack and take a stack of wickets.

2014/15 he played all 10 matches for WA taking 35 wickets at 24. In the last two seasons, I have a feeling he had injury troubles, and played 5 matches over the 2 years taking 5 wickets. Thank goodness we have a top notch physio who'll keep him fit and healthy :facepalm

 Yes, we're fortunate in that respect.
I think this guy probably will do a good job and from what I've read he seems like another outstanding character who will give his all.
However I do hope he's not going to be the only addition to the bowling squad, it's been obvious for a while we need to add a strike bowler and I would not expect Rimmington to be the answer.
I assumed a replacement must have been identified when Durham decided to reject Onions' demands - a 35 year old medium pacer who is an unknown quantity is not what I had in mind so surely there will be more signings to come. Otherwise replacing one mid-30's bowler who we know all about with one we don't know seems an unnecessary risk.

Looking at his 1st class stats for W.Australia is a bit pointless as bowling at Perth is a completely different ball game to bowling at the Riverside particularly in Spring and Autumn. His forte seems to be that he's accurate-if you bowl wicket to wicket at the Riverside and tie batsmen down you'll take wickets. Colly rates him-depends then if things have changed since he formed that opinion.
Don't think we have any chance of landing a top seamer - they'd opt for 1st division. What's the view of a Gidman return?
Remember also McCarthy and Potts were reliable last year. Weighell looked the part at times.

Yeah, I suppose we are not going to be a likely destination for the best players.
I wouldn't be too keen on a return by Gidman but that's only if there are better options , if not we may as well get him back in because he shouldn't cost too much and there's also a realistic chance he could return to his best form.

I was really commenting on Rimmington's fitness record, which I presume is the reason he has played so few games in the last 2 years.

Looks as if he has been fit but lost his place in the team over the past couple of years. http://www.cricket.com.au/news/nathan-r ... 2017-02-28

fair enough. Lets hope he's a success here and doesn't need to go anywhere near the tender ministrations of Wor Nige

It looks as if he had a bad injury early in his career but has been ok since then - famous last words!
Could be a shrewd signing because the reports about him are reminiscent of Thorp and Hastings - reliable seamer, useful lower order batsman and very highly regarded as an exemplary professional by his team mates.
So there are logical reasons for signing him but I'd have been looking at him as an addition to a squad including Onions rather than a replacement.

Totally agree with this. Any word on other new arrivals? Surely we need another strike bowler and another batsman, given Burnham's absence? Much though I've always liked Gidman, he doesn't really fill either of those roles in my opinion.

What blurs things, of course, is that there's still been no official word about Arshad, Hickey, Harte or Harding. What the H is going on?
Very unlikely that Gidman will regain the form of a few years back but taking him on loan for a month or two couldn't do any harm.

I think Hickey and Arshad have definitely gone- Martin Emmerson mentioned them and he'll surely be right. Don't know about the others but I'd guess Harte will stay - although with Durham it is usually pure guess work!
