Two signings would be nice and Rossouw finding his feet in the longer form of the game.

Adams and Ervine retiring?

Absolutely.

I know Holland, Berg and Abbott can all hold the bat (as proved today), but I do think that we are a batter light. So Rilee coming into the side effectively only readdresses that balance. It still leaves us with the under-performing batters. In particular, given their ages, Adams and Ervine are the biggest concerns. And that is across all three formats (Ervine can't buy a white ball run, and Adams doesn't even get into the teams now).

That is two batters that we need to recruit over the winter, at a minimum. And even then, we'd still be risking carrying Alsop and Dawson (although I think both have underperformed this season, and can do better, so would not want to discard either yet - especially not Dawson, with his allround ability).

And that's before even considering the possibility of Vince doing well for England over winter, and us therefore not seeing much of him next summer.

Carberry and Smith are both off the wage bill, so room has been made available.

Fair play to Dawson, in his interview with Solent. Didn't just admit that he's underperformed with the bat this season, also admitted that the batting unit in general has underperformed - and has done so for three years now.

He's clearly been getting criticism in recent weeks, no doubt on twitter, and was big enough to take it and accept it.

I still think there's a Hampshire captain inside of him somewhere.

Well done on staying up Hants followers. Maybe fifth would have looked ok in April, but a little disappointing from the peaks of sunny July. Enjoyed reading your thoughts and insights. Cheers fellas!

Thanks

Top of the table after we beat Warks at home. Three wins, plus two "winning" draws (and a thumping by Essex!). And then we duly failed to win another game for the rest of the season! I guess we did have Somerset 8 down, and made both Essex and Surrey follow-on, during that second half.

I'm happy that he's going purely because I can't see him ever playing. Getting the experience of being in and around the squad will hopefully make him come home to us hungrier to perform.

But, as those stats illustrate, I'd be mightily concerned if he actually had to...you know...play in a test match. It would be Simon Kerrigan at the Oval all over again.

You could probably ask the same question about the batting albeit he was their leading runscorer.
