Not been a great pre-season for Alsop. Duck in the North-South series, now a duck for the MCC vs Middlesex. Given that Carberry has thankfully recovered from cancer - and has been scoring runs in the Carribean for us - Alsop might be playing his way out of a starting place vs Yorkshire. Bailey's lack of availability might just save him.

Shame, because given the age of Smith, Adams and Carberry (even before you consider that they all have failed to shine in four-day cricket for two years now), we really could do with Alsop kicking on in four-day cricket this season and cementing his place in the top three.

Make that another duck for Alsop.

Getting the poor run out the way before the season starts proper!

Anyone know who the Holland is the squad for the warm-up against Sussex tomorrow? A quick search and I found a match a report for a 2nd xi game last June mentioning a 'brilliant all round performance from Ian Holland'.

This bloke perhaps? http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia/c ... 34340.html

That appears to be the same guy- He played a few times for the 2nds in 2015 v Surrey( 2nds Championship),Essex(Trophy),Somerset (2xT20),Sussex ( 2nds Championship and Trophy),Kent ( 2nds Championship and Trophy) with a fair degree of success.
Also played for Fleetwood in Northern Premier League in 2013 and 2015 and 1 game for Victoria in Sheffield Shield + Victoria U23's
Born in USA but started cricket career in Aus working through the Victoria age groups.

From ESPN report re Matador Cup selection

"A batsman and medium-pace bowler, Holland first came to notice in 2012 as the winner of the Cricket Superstar reality television show.

He is a player that can fill a lot of roles for us," Victoria's new coach David Saker said of Holland. "He can bat, bowl and is really strong in the field."

Neither Rossouw or Abbott in the squad for the MCCU game tomorrow (although it appears Edwards has arrived), any reason to worry or just being rested given I assume they only arrived recently? There's also no Berg. Is the fact Taylor hasn't been able to get in the squad for either of our warm up games so far a damning sign for Crane as well given it shows we've not even considered another spinner with Dawson?

I read it more that they are ready to go (remember, unlike others, Abbott and Rilee have been active over the English winter - albeit not Berg), and are certain starters against Yorkshire. Better to use the friendly match for players who either need more time on the field, or still have a place in the XI to fight for.

If I am right, then interestingly it would mean that Smith too starts against Yorkshire. I had thought that his place might be in some doubt.

Alternatively we've already decided there's no space for Smith and this game is a selection playoff between Carberry, Adams and Alsop (with 2 of them in the final XI).

Didn't notice initially that Alsop was in the squad, makes the Crane debate even more interesting as he's presumably back and available as well.

Important game this for Hart, Wheal and Stevenson. There is possibly one bowling spot up for grabs next week (alongside Berg, Abbott and Fidel - plus Dawson), because we may well feel that Topley is ready to be thrown in from the start. You would suggest that after last season, Wheal comfortably leads that group. But who knows. A good, or bad, performance in this game from someone could change that. Plus I understand that Hart and Stevenson can both hold a bat better than Wheal; given that we've lost McLaren's lower order runs, and McManus was way off of Wheater's level last season, strengthening that lower order could be attractive.

Adams gone early and Vince in at number 3. Given Alsop could of come in instead I guess that confirms that Vince intends to start the season off in the number 3 position.

I believe that is FOUR ducks in a row for Alsop, in three different "competitions". Unless he makes runs in the second innings, I'm afraid that he simply cannot start against Yorkshire.

Carberry has presumably done enough to get in the starting XI now so it's a shootout between Adams and Alsop for the other opening spot you'd have thought.

Subject to, as I say, Smith.

We don't know for certain if these three are fighting for one place or two.

We also don't know for certain what are plans are with Rilee. If he is already pencilled in to play against Yorkshire, then what happens if Ervine converts this start into a big score? It's pretty nailed on that Vince and Dawson will both start, regardless of what they do in this game. Or is Rilee not in a four day plans at this stage?
