Red Red Rose: Lancashire 2017

Postby Making_Splinters » Thu Mar 30, 2017 11:17 am

With the Uni games going on, T20 in the UAE done and dusted and the MCC game dealt with, the new season is finally here.

2016 was an interesting season for the Red Rose, riding high early on but ultimately, and with the changes to the LVCC, vitally just staying up. We miserably failed to defend out Blast Trophy, not even making finals day, and we finished bottom of the North Group in the 50 over stuff. But, we stayed in the First Division.

We’ve lost Giles back to the Bears replacing him with Chapple and Chilton, neither of whom I’m particularly enthused by. We sadly lost Smith to injury and AP to a fixing ban. Both huge losses to the side. We cleared the books getting rid of players we never should have signed in Griffiths, Buck and Edwards, and finally called time on Reece’s promise. We’re going to likely lose Hameed for the Tests and Buttler for most of the season somewhere or other.

The upcoming season looks somewhat promising. For once we’ve made some big-name signings bringing in Vilas and Chanderpaul on Kolpak deals, an Aussie U-19 wicket keeper to provide back up to Davies, and pinched McLaren from Hampshire, not forgetting Junaid Khan in the T20. We’d hoped to have the Faulk back but CA have blocked that. Still, it looks one of the more promising Red Rose line ups in a while with two of the most promising young English batsmen potentially in the side.

Should hopefully be a good year. Priority is staying in Division 1, we’re not going to be challenging for the title, plus winning one of the limited overs competitions would be a bonus.

First match

1 Hameed
2 Proctor
3 Croft
4 Livingstone
5 Chanderpaul
6 Davies
7 Vilas
8 McLaren
9 Jarvis
10 Bailey
11 Anderson

Livingstone will have to be the spinner :)

It's unbelievable that Buttler has played only 1 first class game for Lancs in two and a half years. It is not as if he has a central contract either.

Haseeb retired hurt. Not always certain how much of the England players you will get.

Hand injury all clear after a scan today. I suppose the good thing about how this summer pans out is we'll likely have Hameed and Anderson for a couple of games. Despite signings, we're pretty weak at the top with out Hameed.

Obviously hugely disappointing not to force victory in a game which we were in the driving seat for most of the four days. Could probably say that the delay of the declaration to try and let Vilas get his ton didn't help our cause, but you have to take your hat off to Lawrence for a fantastic knock: Essex really have some top class talent in their ranks. Just have to hope that Croft's lack of putting the team before a player doesn't come back to haunt us as the end of the season. We really need to be winning these games when we have Hameed and Anderson available!

Still a fair few positives, obviously fantastic to see Alex finally get his first ton, Hameed played two solid if too short knocks and Vilas seems to be potentially really shoring up the batting. Not to read too much into one game, but, there is a worry that Shiv may be passed it. Also good to see Parry making the most of a rare opportunity to play in the 4 day side, I've genuinely no idea how we've managed to hold on to him all of these years. I do wonder if Triple L is a place to high at 3.

Hameed should be available for most of the season, splinters the guy doesn't play white ball cricket.

Well, we actually don't know how much cricket England will want him to play, especially given the repeated concerns over his hand injuries. Fortunately he doesn't have a central contract so England can't just pull him without some discussion with Lancashire.

The SAffer tests coincide completely with the domestic T20 so it's only the WIndies 3 tests when Hameed is unavailable for Lancs. Ditto for Jennings with Durham.

That's all well and good, but if there are any more scares about his hands then I can see the ECB politely insisting that he's wrapped in cotton wool.

Really solid first two days, and a lovely day out at the Oval yesterday though a bit cold. Good to see that we have the potential for runs throughout the order even if top order fold and that a 42 year. Can't see us getting a result with two days left as it's a pretty flat wicket and Surrey bat deep.

Excellent day's work with the ball to get through a strong Surrey line up on a fairly flat wicket and force the follow on. I have my doubts if lightening can strike twice and we can get them out quick enough and cheap enough to win.

Yet another game not closed out, but with Surrey's batting line up it was not unexpected. Again a lot of positives from this game but we need to transition from these draws to wins because aside from the current performance of the Bears there isn't a weak side in the division and draws aren't going to cut it. The batting seems a lot stronger than expected even without Triple L contributing as of yet, runs from all across the order in the first two games, but we simply can not have a side following on and not get the kill.
