I thought at the time that could be the only justification for a 4year contract. Some 15 years ago a minimum salary for a capped player was £36k with annual salary increments. Bearing in mind the salary cap is £2m, and that includes add ons, only exceptional players can be on anything like £200k.

Certainly they are in the right place for commercial investment and sponsorship, and doubtless they work very hard to bring that money in, but the guaranteed test match staging agreement has to help when selling the benefits of the oval to would be investors/sponsors.

Fortunately for their bank balance, they don't seem to be obliged to pay a stinking fortune to take a crappy old test match in May that nobody else wants when hosting their ashes tests/India tests/Saffer tests/Pakistan tests at the height of summer

Yep. I'd have thought that the guaranteed test arrangement should mean they have to host some of the less box office friendly games, they'd almost certainly still get big crowds.

They make £9.3m from non-cricket conference events in the close season, plus sell out T20's. They're the only solvent County and they've got a proposal on the table for the next meeting of counties for compensation for poached players to be set at double the the salary that the poached player has been offered by his current club- that's in response to Sibley leaving.
Players have the right like any employee to change employer but compensation should be due and that seems a sensible amount.

Harmy's contract was £6k spread over 4 years . £2.5k in year 1 and decreased to about £1.2k in year 4.Don't forget he also went to yorks on loan for while so a small saving was made there.

There should also have been some parachute payments by ECB early on.

The main issue for Durham finances was the cumulative effect of Harmison ,Onions,Collingwood and Plunkett all coming off central contracts in a relatively short period of time and having other high waged players on the books too. The breach of the wages cap is evidence of that.

You mean £600k SW (autocorrect I assume) although the £6k would have been more realistic. I reckon he took less than 60 wickets in that 4 year period so even that is more than £100 per wicket. In reality £10000 per wicket. Nice one ,David.

Mr O'Gorman has explained quite explicitly how he's reached his decision and that there's nothing unjust at all with the penalty.

Mr O'Gorman has explained quite explicitly how he's reached his decision and that there's nothing unjust at all with the penalty.

So the saga is at an end. Wonder if any Middlesex players will be triggering relegation clauses!

Now all they have to do is find some scouts and coaches e.g. Silverwood, Rhodes, Sharp, McGrath, who can identify and develop the vast amount of young talent which undoubtedly exists within the county.
