Allan Border Field, Breakfast Creek, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
(alias AB Field, Neumann Oval, Crosby Park, arguably in Albion rather than Breakfast Creek)
AB Field.JPG
(from http://www.qldcricket.com.au/default.asp?PageID=939 and http://cricket.com.au/default.aspx?s=ne ... y&id=16117)

Website link/s http://www.qldcricket.com
Keepashes:This is the third attempt to get AB Field on the record, thanks to cybersmog. I have set up the map so you see the Cricket ground at the top, and if you read down over Albion Park Raceway you will find a little box for the famous (or infamous) Breakfast Creek Hotel, which is the only place on earth where you can get XXXX beer out of a wooden keg. (Yes well, but there's no accounting for taste, and maybe Linebreaker will join CMS sometime so I'm recognising the respect that Queenslanders shows for cultural history. You may need to set Map Type to the option with "old places" to get the box). Breakfast Creek http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakfast_Creek itself is on the left (twice, since like most Australian watercourses, it meanders like crazy), then turns at right angles and swings east to join the Brisbane River http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brisbane_River. I've added a photo of the hotel below, since it is a perfect example of that understated Queensland taste we all admire so much down south of the border. It has its own website and I'm sure you've heard of it since it says its steaks are world-famous. http://www.breakfastcreekhotel.com/content/?id=11.

The AB Field was most recently the site of Queensland v West Indians 18,19,20,21 November 2009 (4-day match) http://www.cricinfo.com/ausvwi09/engine ... 17773.html where, despite 172 for Queensland by Nick Kruger (b. Paddington NSW) http://www.cricinfo.com/ausvwi09/conten ... /6181.html and 100 by Wade Townsend and 147 by Nathan Reardon, the heroics of Ramnaresh Sarwan http://www.cricinfo.com/westindies/cont ... 52969.html and
 Shivnarine Chanderpaul  http://www.cricinfo.com/westindies/cont ... 51469.html allowed WI to claim a draw.http://www.cricinfo.com/ausvwi09/conten ... 36021.html

Brekkie Creek, lovely. AB Field used to be a rugby league pitch.

Line is a Sydneysider, isn't he? I think he said he lived in Willoughby?

Maybe getting him confused with you, Strolls? :hmmm Is it you who's not on daylight saving on account of it fading the curtains and stopping the cows laying? And who mentioned the selectors meeting at the BC hotel? Must be tough exiled up there. Now that I think of it, it was Lines I was chatting with on 606 about going to NSO and he obviously lived nearby. Was in the middle of an item on Newtown Oval Maryborough so I'd have an excuse to show some of these beautiful old Queenslander houses. Got stuck there for a week in '79 waiting for a windscreen for a '65 XP Falcon Futura and took lots of photos, unfortunately in pre-digital days, but there's heaps on the web. But then I found a game of street cricket in an alley in Melbourne. Stay tuned.

Swan Green, New Forest, Hampshire, England.

From 'The Telegraph', 2005:

Celebrated in literature, groaned about in the pavilion where bruises are nursed, the sloping cricket pitch with its lumpy, unpredictable outfield is woven into the fabric of English village life.

At Swan Green Cricket Club in the heart of the New Forest, however, a ground so pretty that it has featured on chocolate boxes, the state of the playing area is not so much the stuff of legend but a health and safety issue.

Despite cricket having been played there for more than 100 years with no one able to recall a serious injury, the club has been denied promotion on the orders of league safety officials.

Laurie Lee wrote in Cider With Rosie of fast bowler Frank Mansell arriving at the crease with flushed face and heaving shoulders to let loose a ball "like a shot from a cannon", having been invisible at the start of his run up.

In A G MacDonell's England, Their England, the approach of the colossal village blacksmith to the crease could be detected, at first, only by the shaking of the ground, the waving of grasses, and the clamour of small birds rising from trees.

Now, the risk of injury from such encounters brings with it the possibility of compensation claims.

The Hampshire Cricket League has visited Swan Green, noted the 20ft fall from one side of the ground to the other, the five trees that lurk inside the boundary, the bumpy outfield, and decreed that it is too dangerous to play on at a higher level of cricket.

Albury Oval , Dixon Oval and Trevor Barsby Oval, Deagon, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
(alias Deagon Recreation Reserve, home of the Sandgate-Redcliffe CC - "The Gators")

Keepashes: This one had me tricked for a long time, picture-wise, since Queensland Cricket and the Brisbane City Council refer to it as Deagon Recreation Reserve. My main reason for choosing it was in response to Strolls being exiled in Queensland and referring to small poxy grounds, and I wanted to quote the Moreton Bay song, which begins: "But of all places of condemnation / And penal stations in New South Wales / To Moreton Bay I have found no equal / Excessive tyranny each day prevails" . (Note that New South Wales used to cover all the east, including New Zealand, so Moreton Bay http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moreton_Bay was part of the penal settlement of NSW when the song was written: see the dynamic map at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/States_and ... _Australia ).

Moreton Bay http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=-27.32288 ... =0&m=b&v=8 (map centred on Deagon Reserve) gives its name to the tree http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moreton_Bay_Fig on which one of the choir is swinging in that Qantas advertisement I posted above. This is not a bright thing to do, since the limbs are heavy and weak, and prone to falling. The commandant who is killed in the song (to the joy of the convicts), Patrick Logan, is decribed here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Logan and the most famous descendant of the Quandamooka (probably) people who speared him is described here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oodgeroo_Noonuccal ).

The Sandgate-Redgate CC is somewhat less famous, but it has contributed many to Queensland over the years http://redcliffe-and-bayside-herald.whe ... e-expands/ , notably Nathan Rimmington http://www.cricinfo.com/australia/conte ... /7443.html , and Glen Batticciotto http://www.cricinfo.com/australia/conte ... /4260.html. Be sure to look at their clubhouse makeover on their home page and the other photos of the dust storm on their news page.

Now for the musical interlude. You can read the lyrics and play the tune and read the story of the song at http://folkstream.com/061.htm This is part of the Irish heritage that accounts for a lot of what we call "Australian", including a certain attitude problem that 606 posters occasionally refer to during England-Australia contests.

Queensland Cricket's quest to develop the game through the State saw regional cricket managers Barry Weare and Andy Richards spend two weeks travelling through the Torres Strait in August 2007. DD: Maybe not the best looking ground in the world and I was unable to do it justice with the picture. But I have a personal anecdote to it. Playing in our first game of the season in 2008 in the Warwickshire Cup. We arrived promptly, not noticing the dangers that were ahead. We played the first 10 overs in heat of 30+. We caught a drink after these 10 overs. I came on to bowl after the drinks and got negotiated like the rest of my team. I dont believe I picked up a wicket. Earlier in the day I had done a bit of good sportsmanship by not claiming a catch because I had believed it had bounced. They made 140 off 20 overs! We went back to the dressing room, passing pictures of Bell and other england players who played here. We returned with renewed optimism and expected to give the score a good go. Our opener(who usually gets most of our runs) was dismissed for 4! In fact he was the top scorer. With a total of 7 ducks!! We were bundled out for an amazing 17 off 14 overs. I had lasted two balls before getting bowled. Some good players had graced that pitch. On that day, we didnt even match a 100th of them!

Wikimapia link http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=-68.57567 ... 16&l=0&m=b
Website link/s http://www.aad.gov.au/asset/webcams/davis/default.asp (Davis Station webcam: Be sure to watch the timelapse movie of a day at http://www.aad.gov.au/webcams/davis/timelapse.mpg . Brrrrr ..... :scared :scared :scared )

Match report: "The cricket saw Australia again face the Rest of the World. The umpires wore white coats, and the scoring was conducted by a trio seated in the back of a ute, at a table with a vase of plastic flowers, glasses, and a bottle of champagne. A large sign draped across a piece of heavy machinery proclaimed Davis Cricket Ground.

Everyone had both a bat and a bowl. Local rules were imposed capriciously, and the scorers didn't keep accurate totals, but none of that mattered. The stands were full of raucous, bare-chested Aussie and Barmy Army supporters, and everyone had a great time. In the end it was clear that Australia had won, even though nobody knew the real score." :party http://www.aad.gov.au/default.asp?casid=25375 . [ I have tried to centre the map on my best guess at where the batsman was, based on the sequence and colours of buildings on the left.]
Keepashes: I thought this would be the first of the "Penguins in the outfield" series, but there is already a book on playing cricket in the Antarctic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penguins_Stopped_Play by Harry Thompson.

"Frustrated in their quest to reach Captain Scott's hut on a pilgrimage to the last base of the inspiring spirit of their team, Thompson and his shipmates improvise a scratch game of cricket on the ice, with an oar for a bat, a back-pack for stumps and a real ball produced from said back-pack. The author opens the batting, and snicks his third ball down towards long leg. "As I turned for the second run, I beheld an extraordinary sight: the long-leg fielder was being attacked by a gigantic seabird." A skua, unfamiliar with the game, had concluded that the brand new ball was an egg, and was determined to get his beak on it." No doubt Thompson should have rushed to the aid of his unfortunate opponent (he was, remember, carrying an oar at the time) but he spots "the opportunity to steal a third run. And what's more, what was even better, to turn a streaky inside edge into an all-run four." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/column ... icket.html .

There is also an imaginary India vs Pakistan match in Antarctica at http://www1.cricbuzz.com/Cricket_Blog/C ... _Pakistan/.

Two grounds that I will always remember are Lords Nursery Ground which for me was a great pleasure and overall a better experience than playing on the main square itself. There was a place called Little Durnford which sadly no longer stages cricket but besides being an excellent wicket had a backdrop which is impossible to forget.

Pro grounds I would have been honoured to play on in particular are Worcester and Canterbury.
