Old Deer Park Cricket Ground, Richmond, Surrey, England

old deer park.JPG

Old Deer Park sports grounds, view south from Kew Gardens pagoda. I have set up the map so you can see the pagoda on the top centre, and the cricket ground below. The cricinfo picture of the ground shows a reverse view, to the pagoda.

Keepashes: This ground shares history with Richmond Green, since as wikipedia says: "The construction of the railway in the mid 19th century cut the Green off from Old Deer Park, and led to the building of Victorian villas for the more prosperous commuters to London. The A316 road, built in the early 20th century, worsened this separation." I was unable to track down the "... two well-known pub teams, the 'Prince's Head' and the 'Cricketers' ..." from the previous post, but I found the pub and two interesting clubs along the way. One is the Richmond Nomads (which might be the 'Prince's Head' team), and the other is the Richmond CC, which has a connection to Australia that makes a nice story in itself."
The Prince's Head, 28 The Green, Richmond-upon-Thames, TW9 1LX, UK: The big draw of the Princes Head is its location on Richmond Green; some people like to drink by the river because of its nice scenery, but you more often than not find yourself standing or sitting on concrete. Richmond Green has plenty of nice scenery to look at and lots of green bits to sit on. ... The Green is popular with those people who want to forget, for a while at least, that they're in London. Richmond Green has that picture postcard image of the village green, right down to the cricket game which drinkers can observe ... http://ultimatepubguide.com/pubs/info.phtml?pub_id=203
Richmond Nomads CC: A great moment for the Nomads came in 1976 when, after much lobbying of the council, we acquired use of Richmond Green, formerly the home ground of our now defunct arch-rivals the Oddfellows. We set up our HQ in the Prince's Head, forming working parties to convert part of the basement into dressing rooms. In true Nomadic style they were pretty basic - there was no plumming - but they were home. Playing on the green has its eccentricities. The pitch was reasonable - to start with anyway - and there were few hazards apart from the occasional old lady trundling her basket on wheels between batsman and square leg. There were also problems for a fielder circling under a skied catch and trying to keep his footing as his spikes slithered from grass to tarmac and back again. Another oddity in that scorching summer of '76 was the plague of ladybird that infested the area. One Nomad recalls seeing the stumps completely pink with the creatures. Gradually, though, the playing surface deteriorated and the drinking classes became more reluctant to keep off the outfield on sunny afternoons ... It wasn't until we left the Green that we discovered Richmond Town CC had to stop playing there some years before because of two deaths caused by flying cricket balls. http://www.richmondnomads.co.uk/history.html
Richmond CC: Adam Gilchrist http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/player/5390.html , voted Australia's finest ever one-day cricketer, the man who has hit more 6's in Test cricket that any other and Australia's most successful wicketkeeper, played for Richmond for the 1989 season. He has remained a great friend to the Club. His 1999 World Cup Shirt hangs in the bar and each year, he sponsors a young Australian to follow in his footsteps and come to Old Deer Park to develop as a cricketer and as a person. He is a Vice-President of the Club and oftens appears in our bar when in the UK. During his season with Richmond, Adam was a prolific run-scorer, scoring over 2700 runs in the season. He got off to a flying start, recording 996 runs before the end of May. As a result of this success and because 1989 also saw an Ashes series in the UK, one of our members, Robin Pearson, arranged for the BCC to interview this prodigy. This video and the story behind it, in Robin's own words, are shown here.

Stroller95: OR's comment about mountains made me think of this. This ground is up in the hills in the affluent eastern suburbs of Santiago, above the smog level mostly. Sometimes the cordillera is obscured by fog, but when clear it is lovely.
Gollygosh: What a beautiful place, Stroller! Have you been there or just seen pics of it before?
Stroller95: Visited on a look-see for a possible posting - all the cricket is driven by expats, of course. I lived in Chile for 2 years and visited Santiago fairly frequently, but I was based in the deserty north.
Keepashes: Documented this one for the "Llama in the outfield" series. Bottom pic shows Galah CC from Australia Vs Chile First XI, 7th May 2003. I am now off to track down the Galah CC match Vs Gibraltar. Latest Match Report from Craighouse below, from http://www.cricketchile.cl .
La Dehesa Bounce Back , Date: Santiago, 22 November 2009 , Author: Stuart Nelson
A depleted eight man La Dehesa took the field on an unusually overcast and sticky Craighouse afternoon. Things began well for La Dehesa. Big hitting La Reina opener Brant Peters was dismissed in the first over by fellow Australian Matt Callaghan. Skipper Ian Scott was in no mood to hang around and let forth a volley of powerful drives and ably accompanied by Ed Szymanski 75 was added for the second wicket in quick time. Scott finally fell for 35 caught at fly slip by one of the two substitute fielders graciously offered by La Reina. Top scorer for La Reina with an extraordinary 40 runs was ‘Willy the Wide’. If he is able to maintain such enthusiastic support from his La Reina team mates Willy has a big future. Skipper Nelson bagged a couple of wickets before ‘Wolfy’ Wolfenden splendidly wrapped up the innings taking 4-19 in an diverse spell of unreachable and unplayable balls. In the field young Nico Hooper and veteran Richard Clarkson enthusiastically supported the bowlers.

La Dehesa were set 170 to win. Skipper Stuart Nelson opened with Guy Hooper. Opening bowler Brant Peters’ spell began in a leisurely manner, but lack of early success inspired what was to become a quick and hostile session. He finally got some reward in his last over having Nelson caught at sill mid off by an ever agile Mike Meade for 20. By this time a good base of 70 had been established. Matt Callaghan joined Hooper and scored a well timed 20. A wicket a piece for Christian Hesketh and Anurag Chourasia put La Reina back into the game. Young Hector Fuenzalida came to the wicket and set himself to support Hooper’s charge to the victory line. Hector played a few fine shots of his own as the pair made short work of the 60 needed for victory. When the winning run was scored Hooper was left 4 short of his century, but once again his strength and timing were crucial for La Dehesa. Always a fun, competitive fixture the afternoon was enjoyed by all.

Match Report: CCUSA: http://www.cricketcouncilusa.com/MaqT20 ... MaqT20Id=2
Keepashes: This is an interesting one, since the USA seems to have its own Lalit Modi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lalit_Modi, in the form of Florida businessman Mahammad Qureshi (MAQ) http://www.maqgroup.com/ , except that USACA http://www.usaca.org/ doesn't dignify him with a mention on its website, and vice versa for MAQ's Cricket Council USA http://www.cricketcouncilusa.com/Index.aspx, so it seems that relations are not as sweet as they are between the BCCI and Modi. The article below from the Broward-Palm Beach New Times seems to believe that MAQ invented T20, but since it is in the music section .....

Cricket Music, By Jonathan Cunningham, Published on May 21, 2008 South Florida is one of the most fickle sports markets in the country. ... It's a phenomenon that still perplexes non-South Floridians like myself, but it's not scaring off local businessman Mahammad Qureshi, who's getting closer than ever to seeing his beloved sport of cricket gain popularity in the States. Qureshi is the man behind the MAQ T20 Cricket Tournament, a three-day, round-robin affair that has some of the best cricket players in the world coming to Lauderhill to compete. ... When I initially saw the flier for this event, I was more intrigued by the music lineup than anything ... With acts like Allison Hinds http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alison_hinds (the queen of soca http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soca_music), Marcia Griffiths http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcia_Griffiths (the queen of reggae http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggae), and Ky-Mani Marley http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky-Mani_Marley (the king of reggae's son) on the bill ... On Sunday, there's a shift from West Indian music like reggae and soca to more Eastern sounds like chutney http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chutney_music, bhangra http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhangra, and bollywood music http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filmi, with Ropal G and Adesh Samaroo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adesh_Samaroo heading a lineup that's as diverse ethnically as it is sonically. There's a rich musical tradition attached to all of this, and the delectable sounds of live chutney music alone is worth checking out. We're talking about an amped-up version of bhangra/soca that's most popular in Guyana and Trinidad, and it's not commonly performed here ...

What's unique about this particular cricket event is that the sport itself is getting a slight alteration. Typical cricket matches can take a full day, or even five days, to complete. Think tea, crumpets, jolly old England, and way too much free time at everyone's disposal. That style of cricket could never catch on in America, so Qureshi has modified it and come up with a much faster style called 20/20......http://www.browardpalmbeach.com/2008-05 ... ket-music/

New Town Elementary School Recreation Ground, Owings Mills,
Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Match Report : This video was shot on August 1 at the Cricket USA 2009 Tournament at the Cricket Grounds located behind New Town Elementary School in Owings Mills. ... Thanks to Tejash Natali, Girish Parab and Sanjeev Singh of OMCC Cricket USA, and the Owings Mills Recreation Council for making this edition possible. We had a great, sunny, summer day that started very early, around 7AM when volunteers from the OMCC began arriving to put the cricket ground together. The morning match was the last semi-final between the College Park Jaguars and OMCC's own Team 2. In a test of Youth VS. Experience the OMCC2 team prevailed over the kids from College Park. In the afternoon a Final match was played between OMCC1 and OMCC2. Although the OMCC1 team captained by Sanjay triumphed over their brothers led by Ciby, everyone joined in the celebrations afterwards. The OMCC Chargers will continue to play practice games and matches on weeknights and weekend days even now, after the tournament. Please visit and see for yourself if you're interested. The players and their families are all very nice people, and Tej, Girish or any of the players will be glad to explain how the game works. ... http://www.awesomemaryland.com/2009/08/ ... ot-at.html
Keepashes: This one was a related Youtube video next to the previous USA one, and the enthusiasm of these guys for creating cricket in Maryland made it seem worth recognising their efforts on CMS. I also like the fact that they call themselves "CricketUSA.org", though http://tournament.cricketusa.org/tourna ... x?PageID=4 isn't exacttly in the same league as MAQ. Finding the bloody place was a small nightmare, partly because a link I found to a website that showed the school http://www.greatschools.net/maryland/ow ... ry-School/ placed it way wrong on the map, and in the absence of street numbers the description of the pitch as "behind the school" made no sense. Luckily "wikimapia with old places" identified the ELEMENTARY SCHOOL as well as the HIGH SCHOOL, which in the new version appear to be one place (they're opposite one another!). :angry . At any rate, I figure I've finally nailed down the playing field where the video happens, though the picture must predate the creation of the bare scar of the pitch. And it's a nice video that says what cricket is all about at the grass roots, so ....

Keepashes For those who have been eagerly awaiting the adventures of Galah CC after they left the Craighouse Ground in Chile in 2003 on their way to Gibraltar, I'm sorry to say I haven't found them in Gibraltar, but I DID encounter them in Slovakia (with the ground not mentioned, alas). However, the article at http://www.icc-europe.org/DATABASE/ARTI ... 1478.shtml listed their 2005 tour as: "On Wednesday, 3rd August, Slovak Cricket Club was honoured to welcome the players of Australian Club GALAH. Galah CC was on a cricket tour to Europe having already visited Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and finishing in Stratford, England." This gives me an excuse to file them under ddb's article while I go look for more. I am determined to have a galah in the outfield. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galah#Aust ... slang_term
