Cricket Grounds of The World

Postby Keepashes » Tue Nov 17, 2009 10:12 am

FTS suggested I start this, but of course the story of most grounds can be found on Cricinfo, and I don't aim to emulate fast_lambo. Looking for an angle, I decided that it was a good application for wikimapia, since Cricinfo doesn't have links to the actual location of the ground, which is what wikimapia is all about. After a few trials, I found that the main grounds seem already to have been marked on wikimapia, but there's also a lot of semi-advertising rubbish there that can make it hard to use the search feature quickly. So, for the convenience of CMS colleagues, I propose that we assemble our own list on this thread, so we can search it and find a view of the ground quickly.

The only problem I see with this approach is that the editing limits don't lend themselves to updating a comment on a ground, and it could get a bit tedious if bits and pieces of commentary are interspersed through a thread. On the other hand, it would be even more tedious to try to assemble a complete article on an individual ground before posting. As a compromise, what I propose to do is to have a basic template for a post on a ground, which goes like this:

Header: Name of ground and country in large bold

Picture (image link or attachment, not too big).
    Cricinfo link (URL) where available
    Wikipedia link (where available)
Wikimapia link (generally available, but can be time-consuming if it isn't already marked)
    Website link/s: where available.

On that basis, using the Quote feature would enable folk to add any personal commentary on any gound that was of interest. I will leave this here and proceed to my first example, namely the Sydney Cricket Ground. :hi

This is a test of the scheme, mainly. I used the QUOTE feature, then deleted the quote bits at begginning and end, to save space. Next quoter please delete this lead-in section (in italics)
Keepashes: (we could tag our experiences, advice on where to park, whatever, with a quote, like this) My personal experience of this ground is just that my sister-in-law dragged me along to see an England-Australia Test in what must have been 1958 (since I went to their 50th wedding anniversary celebration last year!!). All I remember is that it was blazing hot and I got sunburned and no amount of soft-drink worked, but a cup of tea brought out gallons of sweat that cooled me down marvellously.

This ground is Lara's favourite....
:)
He scored his first century on this ground (277, wasn't it?), and he rates taht century as one of his best (alongside his 153* at Bridgetown against Australia). I believe he named his daughter Sydney because of the great memories he had of this ground....

Don't be lazy Mike, or it will all get untidy. I have edited it neatly, so we can make a blog out of it in due course. And you a Press Officer too. For shame. :slap

Keepashes: Another beachside ground by way of thanks to D/L for Scarborough. Coogee is the home of the Randwick part of the Randwick-Petersham Cricket Club, starring Simon Katich and Nathan Hauritz - well, when they're not busy elsewhere, anyway. The picture comes from http://www.sfnsw.org.au/News-and-Events ... fault.aspx advertising the annual cricket match between the Minister for Health's XI and mental health consumers in NSW.

Dimi, that looks lovely.

Can someone do the ground in Kent, I think, please, with the oak tree in the outfield?
