It's news to me. Think he had a decent time with them so it's a bit surprising things have come to an abrupt end there. Perhaps it's just a case of the club wanting to move in a new direction so he was told his first team days were over.

quite surprising that. I thought he was settled, although it didn't really look as though his red ball performance had improved much on his latter years with us. Seems odd that this has happened just as the new season is about to start

Yep. If it was a case of the club deciding he wasn't part of their plans , the discussions to terminate the deal surely would have taken place some time ago.

Maybe he'll come back here. After all he did used to ( jokingly ...or perhaps not!) claim he was the best spinner at Durham!
Seriously, I doubt he will return because the impression when he left was that he was prepared to take a significant cut (ie effectively given a white ball contract) but was still deemed surplus to requirements.
Although if he does come back what's the betting Poynter will still keep ?!

I can't see it myself, but then we don't have many players with a lot of experience, so who knows?

I agree. Leaving Gloucs so close to the start of the season suggests he has something lined up but I'd be very surprised if it involves us.

The last I spoke to him about 4/5 weeks ago he was training hard and looking forward to the new season.
It is possible that he has been told he will have limited appearances- Dent is now skipper and Roderick( wkt/ batsman) seems have returned to full fitness to resume his first team place. They also Bracey as back up keeper.

Yeh. He's not going to merit a place as a batsman so rather than hang around in the 2nd logical that he comes home to his young family, Gloucs pay up most of his contract and he makes up the surplus with a club contract. Suits both parties.
