I hadn't considered that, tbh. Cricketers don't get bought and sold in their own domestic league, do they? Clubs make approaches for out-of-contract players by giving 28 days' notice of their intention to speak to them, surely?

I think that's right, the 28 day approach applies to players in the last year of their contracts but he seems to be saying that no contract offer was made until he was in that last year. If that's true it was at the very least extremely careless to run down the contract knowing for sure he would be in demand. Rocky could be just trying to make excuses for going but now I have a feeling something funny might have been going on and they wanted him off the wage bill.

I took his meaning to be that he discovered that the club were in such financial difficulty that they needed someone to come in and buy them out of trouble, so he scarpered before there was any chance of it affecting his wages..... I'll bet you that he was the one who gave Diva a ring, and not the other way around

That could be it. The quote on its own is ambiguous, we know the club were looking for a buyer so he may well have Ben referring to that as the reason for the delay in contract discussions.

I wish players were bought and sold- at least that would mean clubs would be adequately compensated for players they'd developed. I'm pretty certain Stoneman has been offered and rejected a contract offer long before the club for into financial difficulties.In this era of agents smaller clubs are always going to have difficulties retaining young protegies which is why Carse and Potts were offered long term contracts.

You're right about Rocky rejecting a deal although there's a difference of opinion between him and Harker over the details. DFM also correct in thinking the " buyer" referred to the buyer for the club.

we knew that, I think, but good to have it confirmed..... and most optimistic not most realistic FTECB predictions to boot

what rankles is that FTECB realised through the Durham experience that this bidding process for internationals was unsustainable, and almost immediately scrapped it before more counties slid into unmanageable financial difficulties.......... yet they still hit Durham over the head with the biggest *modded* sledgehammer they could find, whilst not even completely rescuing them. If the Council hadn't bowed to ECB blackmail and decided against exchanging the debt owed for shares in the club, then Durham would have gone to the wall anyway.

The whole thing stank then, and it still stinks now

Jennings has had such a poor couple of years that he didn't really hurt us. Coughlin was such a waste of space that I still haven't noticed if he left a hole, but the other two......... they shafted us big style.... thanks for the help, thanks for the training, thanks for the faith you showed in us, thanks for sticking with us through thick and thin and for giving us the opportunity to make the absolute most of whatever talent we had..... but don't ask us to show any sort of loyalty at all during an existential crisis as a refusal often offends.
