Yep. We'll probably never know. If there wasn't an issue and The Times story is correct it seems strange to not sign him.

ICC appoints Scotland’s Coetzer
Kyle Coetzer, the Scotland batsman who is No 22 in the one-day international rankings, has been appointed to the ICC’s cricket committee. While the governing body welcomed the services of the former Northamptonshire player, Durham, who have been struggling for runs this season, did not take up the offer to employ him despite his modest demands.

Another strange decision. It's not as if we have/had many better options.

Remember he'll be contracted to Scotland which would affect his Durham availability and I don't think he's any better than what we already have,. Plus he must be approaching the veteran stage.

Yes. Having thought again it might also send out the wrong signal if we sign too many former players!

I saw Marcus North on Look North tonight saying that Durham have an excellent crop of youngsters and (once this period of rebuilding is over) should be wining championships again

He may be right but unless we get the right balance between the youngsters and established cricketers who are prolific run scorers/wicket takers I don't see it happening. For starters any young star who shines in a poor team will almost certainly be signed by a bigger county. And I'm not sure if there are any real stars in the making just now- Steel looks the best of the batsmen but we had nothing to do with his development and whilst all of the young bowlers have talent they all seem to get injured on a regular basis.

I'm surprised that Colly wasn't named as one of the 6 England team scouts which to me indicates that he's going to become the"independent full time selector". They've had plenty time to choose the candidate and yet are delaying any announcement.Waiting until Colly announces his retirement from playing?

I think you're right. He was an obvious choice as a scout so there must be another role lined up.
