Surely it's perfectly reasonable to put a caveat of "conditional on fitness" on a 35 year old fast bowler with a back condition, particularly when the club have been twice bitten with Harmison and Blackwell. The fact that Rimmington was given a 2 year contract suggests that had Onions lowered his financial demands he could have been granted an extended contract. It's sad that he's departed with a touch of bitterness.

Yes, it's a shame how it ended. I can understand why Durham felt they couldn't agree to his demands and Colly has had the sort of one year rolling contract for several years so Onions could have followed his example.
My worry though is once they decided not to agree to his terms they really needed to go out and sign a couple of top class bowlers and they haven't done it - even if Rmmington turns out to be a star I fear we are still a little weak given Rushy is almost certainly past his best and the younger bowlers all seem to be Paul Coughlin types - talented but injury prone.

Yep! He would seem to be the obvious candidate. A boost for the local pub trade if it is him!

That would explain 7am - doing the pressy on his way home from the pub.

If I know Durham CCC like I think I do, there is no way they would make an announcement like this about an underwhelming damp squib of a signing.....

 Indeed!
Arguably Mustard would be in that category - while he would likely improve our one day side and did a decent job at Gloucestershire, he was clearly past his best when we let him go. It would also suggest that we are signing someone no longer deemed good enough by Gloucestershire. That said I wouldn't be against him returning, presumably wouldn't be an expensive signing and it's not as if he'd be taking the place of an up and coming player.
The timing suggests it will be him but there's a chance it's just a coincidence and it may be someone else ...have FTECB decreed that Smith or Warner are not allowed to play county cricket? ;)

even as an indian supporter got to say that is an awful signing for Durham.

Durham sign Axar patel for 6 county championship games.
http://www.durhamccc.co.uk/news-and-med ... rham-deal/

be interesting to see how he goes because at the moment Axar patel is an all rounder that can not bat or bowl.

his bowling is very white ball suited so it should be interesting to see how he goes in the red ball, is batting awful from odi performances he isn't one player that likes pace bowling or the moving ball.
odd pick for Durham though unless they picked him because BCCI are paying Durham and because he averages 48 with the bat and 30 with the ball.

Axar Patel?http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/player/554691.html
Not exactly a marquee signing but, with respect to Dr Cricket, an average of nearly 50 with the bat and 79 wickets at 30 suggests he has some ability. Whether he can adapt to Riverside is the key issue.

Sure he has ability but not sure you would get a player that averages 50 with the bat or 30 with the ball.
he is at the moment a poor man jadeja.

at least with jadeja you got a player that can bowl in the long format.

odd signing though since Axar patel not played in the long format singe 2016 and his bowling isn't suited to the long format and in the international format his batting struggled against pace and the moving ball.

wish him good luck though, like I said on twitter wonder if A patel took the deal as a sign that he wants to improve and push for a test spot considering at the moment he isn't a shoe in for any format for the indian team, most likely K yadav, Chahal ahead of him in the white ball stuff and then Ashwin and jadeja want to be back in the mix as well.

probably a sign from him that he wants to concentrate on the long format again.

Time will tell but this smacks of another on the cheap signing. It may prove to be an inspired move though so hopefully I'll be wrong.
Is it really that difficult for them to find an top class established international player who is free during the required timeframe? Apparently it is!

Last first class game December 2016!
I'm sure there is some logic behind this signing but I can't think what it is - signing someone who seems to be a one day specialist for Championship cricket when he hasn't played a first class game in well over a year. And he has never played test match cricket.
