Axar Patel to play for Durham. He does has the potential to score handy runs and pick wickets even in long format as he has shown with all round performance in couple of Ranji seasons playing for Gujarat. In recent past years he did not play any Ranji matches because Indian think tank had informed ODI and T20 specialists players to skip Ranji and be available at NCA for training and recovery. Also played only few matches in 206-2017 season. Gujarat actually wanted Axar to play for them but Axar like other ODi and T20 cricketers of India were skipping Ranji due to think tanks decision. So it's not that he is not interested in longer format nor that he was not wanted by Gujarat in playing 11.

I won't be surprised if he takes couple of five fers against the county teams even with his left arm spin at a reasonably fast pace for a spinner. Certainly won't be bowling at the speed of Kumble though. More like Samit Patel's pace. Infact i think that if he increases his pace to that of Jaddu and bowls stump to stump then he might still get wickets because England county batsmen will find such bowling difficult as well. What Durham will be benefited is he can give a 30 to 40 overs spell easily an innings if required and knock couple of 50's.

That sounds more promising! I was wondering why he hadn't played first class cricket recently but it's not because he wasn't deemed good enough.

He will have to deliver because an Asian spinner is expected to give performances. Harby in one county season failed miserably. as far as picking wickets was concerned. Obviously Harby was past his prime and found it tough, but it's not going to be very easy as well for Axar. More of a stump to stump to stump bowler. Can dart it at 105 kph at times if he thinks there is a need to ball a slider if required. Not a world beater for sure but certainly promising having taken wickets and runs in Ranji.

Would have been good signing for white ball cricket, not so sure about the longer format though?

Yeah. He would seem ideally suited to T20. I think the one day part of the Indian tour is before the test series so will likely clash with our T20 domestic competition.
A spinner on end of season pitches should be effective but I guess the downside is he's replacing an opening batsman so our batting - which looks vulnerable to me - will be weakened even though he has a good record as a ( presumably) lower order batsman.

Yeah he has a decent f/c record with the bat, could do a job at 7 but will most likely bat 8

Any truth in the rumour that Vic has just gone to Taunton for in-service training? :no

Lewis seems to think Patel hasn't been playing first class cricket because he couldn't get into his team - Adi's explanation is surely correct and it was the Indian board who decided not to make him available for selection.

“He’s had a lot of experience with India with the white ball but his domestic first-class cricket is good & the reason he may not have played more for India with the red ball is the standard is very, very high in his area.”

“Having seen lots of him & spoken to lots of people.... "

No, he's just saying that he hasn't played red ball Cricket for India.
Can't believe that JJ has seen a lot of him...if that's true it makes him a very conscientious coach. Get the impression he wasn't directly involved in the decision.

I misread the article, didn't notice he referred to international red ball cricket! His batting and bowling averages are very impressive and we've been crying out for a quality spinner and one playing on end of season pitches should be very effective - if we can score enough runs.

I've still got an uneasy feeling about this season, if our key players all perform to their potential and (stay fit !)we might be ok but if they don't I fear mid table mediocrity in the championship and no real chance of success in the one day competitions are on the cards.

Finally i found a link that mentions some short format Indian cricketers were not playing full part in Ranji as per think tanks advise even though BCCI and domestic teams wanted their players to be aprt of their ranji squads.

Surely Axar wont have batting average in England what he averages in India. This is his first tour of England. I expect him to average somewhere between the range of 15 to 23 runs as far as batting is concerned. He will find it very tough batting in England as compared to batting in India. He is a all-rounder who excels at bowling than at batting. He has to perform like a specialist spinner. Runs should be seen as bonus. Stalwarts like VK,Chet, Sachin, Mahela have struggled on some tours of England. Sanga has been successful lately but then he has had a long test career experience and skills as number 3 batsman. Axar will find it tough to even attain half the FC battign average of 48.45.

Regarding Jon Lewis's comments, it is true that India has Ashwin, Jaddu, Chahal and Kuldeep have been doing well at internatioanl level so Axar is finding it difficult to get in test 11 .

Yes. I also can't see any chance of him matching his batting average in India over here. He will certainly be a big improvement over our other spinners - he's an international player from one of the top cricket nations and our number 1 spinner over the past few years has been hopeless!

Makes perfect sense engaging a top class spinner. We have and will continue to produce top batsmen and top seamers but in 25 years have been unable to produce an even half decent spinner. We're not alone in that, of course. Batting wise there's a fair chance that a few amongst Harte, Jones, Weighell or Carse might surprise us like Steel did last season.
Might also be a final wake up call for Pringle.
