At least 4 months is the prognosis.

sorry, Capt.... I knew exactly what was happening with Coughlin, I was just enjoying reading the answer.

Wor Nige's prognosis would be fit in time for next week, after a 'just a niggle' diagnosis

well... Markram has been sent here by Big Ottis and Benks to develop him as a cricketer

I wonder what he's learnt?

To wait until August next time?

I've learnt nothing, because I've seen first hand what happens to opening batsmen up here in the early season. It's just a shame that JJB hadn't had that same level of experience before laying out a shed load of cash

Still..... he might fill his boots when he gets to play down south in Northampton or Derby?

hey ho..... perhaps one day we'll try to get a thoroughly destructive overseas seamer for the first few matches to better help us try to defend the kind of pathetic totals we usually achieve early season

sounds about right

if only there was some way to predict what might happen at the riverside in April........ assuming you don't just look at every first day scorecard since Diva left

I've just been checking the fixture list, and we don't appear to know how to spell calendar.

maybe it's one of those Americanised sulfer/yogurt things that we are supposed to observe these days

doh!........... Americanised..... how stupid am I?

Yes. I think you're right, a quality seamer is almost guaranteed to take wickets early season and have far more of an influence.
Best way of strengthening this batting squad is with a Kolpak type, despite our salary cap the various departures over the last 2 years must mean we have some cash to spare. Unfortunate to be without Steel today ( although he might be secretly pleased to miss out ) Markram is a quality player who might be on a hiding to nothing in a short spell but probably will get runs but apart from Colly , who else in that top 7 has a track record of consistent run scoring ? They're either inexperienced or have experience but are not renowned for churning out runs on a regular basis.

It's certainly true that only really Diva has ever been able to cope with early season wickets up here.... at least for as long as I've been watching.

Markram is an undoubted talent, but he is only starting his international career and probably hasn't experienced anything quite like that before. He came here on the back of some really good form against some world class bowlers too, but that hasn't helped him at all today. Even Sanga failed miserably up here and only filled his boots when he played for us at Hove... and he was one of the finest top order batsmen of this century, so why we think it worth our while splashing out on a youngster is beyond me.

Markram may very well eclipse anything Diva has done at international level... he may even have already done so, but Diva had a world of county cricket experience to help him once he arrived here. It was that experience that was priceless and is not something that can be found in a short term overseas signing, imo. We're just throwing money away

Yep. Top order batting early season at the Riverside is a thankless task so a quality overseas bowler would almost certainly be better value.
