perhaps Markham will prove me wrong

I hope so, but I'll be watching the scorecard from behind the sofa

We should be signing a big, bouncy, snarly fast bowler. Pattinson took about a hundred wickets for Notts in their first 4 matches last year, and after that everyone spent the rest of the season just trying to close the gap

makes no sense to me

Yep. Almost certain to get much better value out of a fast bowler.

Even Shiv wasn't daft enough to play in April for us and he had proven, undeniable, stickability quality in those days

Reading some of the reports from South Africa and it appears as if Benks/Gibson and Stephen Cook were involved in the Markram signing!

except that it will be to help his development as a player for SA

Yep! I was trying to find the article mentioning Benks/Cook - couldn't find it but I did come across one from about 10 days ago where Gibson "says he isn't quite clear on what has attributed to Aiden Markram's sudden loss of form in the middle...scores of 9,8,32,22 and 32."
Sounds ominous!

We'll probably end up bringing in a medium pacer for the last part of the season when conditions mean either a spinner or batsmen are more useful!

nah... we have a score of medium pacers already

we'll probably sign a T20 specialist and pay him to hang around for the last 4 or 5 CC matches

Lewis implied we might do just that - said something about deciding if 1 player could be both the second T20 overseas and then play in the remaining CC games or if we needed 2 different players.

at least he's acknowledging that we may need 2 different players. Of course, if we are having a rubbish season, then he might not bother

I think - assuming there are no more proper signings over the next few weeks - we are short in both batting and bowling. Plenty of potential but very few proven performers who are consistent performers and /or consistently fit enough to play.
So I'll be pleasantly surprised if we are pushing for promotion.

I wonder if Durham can approach FTECB and ask to play white ball cricket only this season

The 4 games Markham plays are v Kent, Derby, Leics and N'hants. Apart from 43year old Stevens hardly a bowler of note amongst the lot of them. If a current international batsman can't fill his boots against that lot....
