He even blames himself for holding back Brown’s career. “Lara had got six hundreds on the bounce. Simon did everything to get him out. Only I didn’t do my bit, did I? And who knows? That might have got Simon into the Test side sooner.”

Scott says that when Brown was finally picked for England, in 1996, “he wasn’t bowling quite so well”. He won one cap.

he needn't beat himself up about that.... England have a dreadful record of picking players when they are out of form, rather than when they were in it

Yep, after the horse has bolted. Wasn't Brown's one test around the time he was discovered in a skip covered in paint after a lively night out prompting David Boon of all people to set a midnight curfew? That incident might have been a little later though!

New version of"painting the town red". I remember in our 1st season in a televised 60 over? Benaud saying England should be watching this lad Brown whom he'd been impressed by earlier in the season. But what did Richie know?

Midnight curfew fair enough- Boony knew that by midnight you'd had ample time to sink 2 dozen Fosters.

Yep! His views would have meant nothing to the 'expert' selectors!

Interview with Colly in The Telegraph. He says he wants to go into coaching but has no concrete plans after the Winter tour with England.
Wants to play for Shotley Bridge and joked that the only regret about retiring now is that his daughters only started to watch him play this season so they probably think he's rubbish!

Yes! I don't know anything about club cricket but the likes of Muchall seemed to score runs for fun almost every innings in second X1 championship cricket so if Colly does turn out for Shotley Bridge he'll probably score a hundred every time!

I can picture the scene now - daughters watching as he turns the air blue after being fired out lbw!

Can't see how he can be available to play club cricket if he takes a full time coaching post at 1st class level

he wouldn't be, in that scenario, but he's had plenty of part time coaching roles in the past which made it possible for him to play cricket in a team of club cricketers out of their depth at first class level

I think he might be hoping to just play the occasional game. I don't know how it works but once he is retired from FC cricket could he just turn up and play the occasional game or would he still have to be registered as a pro?

He just registers as an amateur like any other player. Killeen, Bridge and Thorp all play for Burnopfield. The distinction between pro and amateur is a very grey area nowadays.
