Have the manufacturers commented?

What does a bad batch mean? Every ball made this year?

Surely every ball is made in exactly the same way with exactly the same materials. Maybe the weather has affected the cork tree in some way or the leather has come from a different breed of cow?!

All seems a bit far fetched, and another excuse for bad batting!

It's strange but I've heard players before saying they were sure a certain batch of balls (!) behaved differently. As you say it could well be an excuse but think the average runs per wicket this year is the lowest in about 45 years so there may be some merit to the argument ( although Colly did joke that his own stats this year probably dragged the overall average down!)
He said that the White kookaburra ball was no problem on the pitched at CLS but the red balls were seaming all over the place. I think that playing the 4 day games at either end of the season is a big factor.

I remember (or think I do) the England players using the previous year's balls because they thought they swung more. Around the mid noughties. So players think it happens.

Yep. I think there must be something in it, could be players subconsciously feeling powerless and blaming external factors but there have bee so many low scores this season so Colly could well be right.

perhaps it's one of those self-fulfilling superstitions

anyway.... congrats to all the Hanty's on securing div 1 status

onwards and upwards and merry chistmas

the way the county championship is being book-ended to start ever earlier and finish ever later, the new season is probably only about 12 weeks away, so get all your winter chores done sharpish.... don't put it off, it'll be too late if you do

Topley out.... unsurprising.

Fuller and Barker in. I was surprised by Barker, but I'm more surprised by Fuller who never seems to have got much game time at Middlesex. Perhaps that just means he wasn't as good as the bowlers they did have, so why would he interest Hants?

unless there are contract doubts over Edwards and Abbott?

or maybe he's trading occasional T20 matches for one county with occasional T20 matches for another

I'm pretty sure Abbott will be with us next season, but think that may be it for Edwards unless he signs another one year deal sometime.

Yep, DFM totally underwhelmed by those two bowling signings, but we shall see.

Not overly confident that we'll survive next season, the bowling might not be able to help out our weak batting lineup next time.

As for Topley, worst signing ever.

Topley was there 3 years as well, I believe. Hard to understand why anyone would pay him 3 years money for a handful of T20 matches and not much else. I can't imagine anyone taking a punt on a guy with the kind of injury problems that he has... which is a shame, because I have no doubt that a fit Topley could have been a very good bowler

Giles White was very confident about Fidel returning next year.

Fuller always seems to score runs against us, as well as taking a few wickets. So I wonder if his signing is more based on what we've seen first hand, as opposed to his general form, stats, ability etc.

Barker, like Fuller (and Berg, Abbott, Holland), falls into the category of a bowler who can hold a bat. Dawson's first class batting has regressed so much, you could even put him in that bracket too. In his end of season interview, White was quite vocal in suggesting that if we're going to play Fidel and Crane together next season (which is the plan), then expect us to pack the side with bowling all-rounders above them. And these two signings fit into that. I suspect a lack of batting quality is another reason to go slightly bowler heavy.

I suspect what these signings almost certainly mean are (a) we're signing an overseas batter, and (2) Fidel, and probably Berg, won't be thrown the white ball next season at any time.

As for Topley, it was his decision to leave. After sticking by him during his injuries, the club are very, very angry at him by all accounts. You just need to see how brief and plain the statement was which the club released in announcing his departure. I get that he was disappointed at being left out of the final XI for the Lords final, but he's just chucked his toys out of the pram. Yes he was out of contract, but my understanding is that we were willing to give him another year if he proved his fitness post his latest surgery.

An injury prone fast bowler - we usually have a vacancy for those types. He can take over from McCarthy.

I thought we dealt exclusively with injury prone medium pace bowlers
