Did Rimmington bowling improve later on? Agree with you on the opening spell looked very ordinary. Thought his batting looked better than his bowling. Mind saying that the first few times i saw Callum Thorp bowl I thought Hussey had just done one of his old mates from Perth a favour and got him fixed up and he turned out ok.
I thought Weighell and Potts where poor when they came on 1st and 2nd change as well.
The batting! wow that was poor. Surely they are better than that as a unit.

Yes, I also thought Rimmington was poor in his first spell but he looked more of a threat when he came back. So did Weighell. Far too many poor deliveries by Weighell & Potts before that.

Lack of pre-season practice is unfortunate and the loss of Steel at the last minute forcing them to rejig the order didn't help but I think there are grounds for concern - Rushworth today looked like he did last year, very threatening for a few overs at the start and then suddenly losing his edge. Rimmington had a pretty good day but on first look he might be more suited to first change behind two genuine strike bowlers ( which we haven't got )and the rest of them are inexperienced ( and injury prone .)

Rushy is the biggest worry. 15 wicketless overs after his initial breakthrough in conditions where you'd expect him to clean them out.

I agree. The early wicket and he caused Kuhn problems early on but then no threat. Maybe it's just rustiness but there must be a concern because his performances over the last couple of seasons has suggested he is not the force he was.

and yet his numbers for last season ended up looking pretty decent. I think we perhaps just expect more from him than others... which is to his credit, I suppose

I wonder if the work load Rushy has had over the past good few seasons have taken their toll. He has never been quick but he appears to have lost that bit of zip he had especially after his opening spell. He is still a quality bowler but does not quite look what he did 3 years ago.

It was almost guaranteed that he'd get the pair when we had those handful of overs to bat at the end of the day. There was something inevitable about it. The only surprise was we only lost the one wicket - Smith & Potts had more than a few scares but somehow survived.
I think a chase of around 150 for Kent would give us a decent chance but I also think we won't be putting that theory to the test unless someone plays a blinder. Still, you never know.

I think you're right. He's not the strike bowler he once was. As soon as the new ball gets a few overs old he seems to immediately become less of a threat.

And then you watch Darren Stevens today and not wanting to knock the bloke but he is a club bowler, yet he continues to take wickets. He barely used to bowl at Leicestershire and now at 41 he is opening the bowling in championship cricket bowling at barely 70mph.

Bloody Hell - just got in having not seen the scorecard all day. What a start....
Feel a bit sorry for Markram - Cook who is ten years (or more) older couldn't buy a run for us at this stage last season, so probably shouldn't expect too much from a youngster in his first early season county stint. The problem is that we are so short of strength in depth, and of quality if truth be told, that we NEED our overseas players to be briliant from ball one.
Why were Steel and McCarthy not playing? Injuries presumably?
Fingers crossed for an epic comeback tomorrow, with a match winning century from Poynter......

I don't know why McCarthy isn't playing, he was down on the card as 12th man for the University game.
Steel is apparently ill - on the card today he was down to open with Smith at 3 and then there was the late change to bring Harte in at 3 and Smith moved up to open.

Some of our lot seem to bowl too short to me. If the ball is moving around they should surely pitch it up more, this afternoon Potts was bowling boundary balls , so too was Weighell.
