Durham Match Thread 2018

Postby Durhamfootman » Tue Mar 13, 2018 6:21 pm

Who opens with Markram?
Does Latham keep wicket in the limited over stuff?
Which medium pacer on our books lines up with the 2 certainties?
Does Poynter play or does Richo get the gloves back?

1. Markram
2.
3. Steel
4. Clark
5. Richardson
6. Collingwood
7. Poynter
8. Pringle
9.
10. Rimmington
11. Rushworth

Steel opened in the last match of last year and reassuringly scored 10 and 5. Will everyone move up one place to make room for 4 medium pacers (5 if we include Colly)?

Am I being a bit harsh on Rimmington? His profile mentions fast bowler, but he's 35, so I have a feeling he might be another early 80's bowler

I also suspect he is a medium pacer, only taken 5 wickets in an innings 3 times in 38 matches and has an average of 30. Doesn't appear to be a strike bowler to me-time will tell!

Don't forget Will Smith - either him or Steel opening and the other at 3. Maybe have Weighell and/or Potts in the bowling lineup - if they're fit and I don't think Potts is!
It all looks very threadbare - Clark and especially Steel were excellent last year and we'll be relying on them to further improve whilst also hoping Colly can continue to defy time. I think it's going to be a tall order. And I think the bowling has been a major failing over recent times and we'll be weaker this year - on paper.

Agree with all that captassuming Smith's omission is an oversight rather than deliberate D/F. McCarthy and Weighell will be 3rd and 4th seamers initially(Carse is injured apparently).Pringle needs to step up quickly;he's been given more than enough opportunity.
Emphasised the need for a few more experience bodies.

Yep, the occasional score or good bowling performance won't do - especially as he's now a senior player in a team with a fair amount of inexperience. Richardson is another one who needs to make more of an impact for me.

Come to think of it, early season that No7 spot should be purely a batting spot as what little, if any, slow bowling required can be provided by Steel and Smith. Clark would also supply an extra seam option.
I'd like Jones and Harte to be given opportunities pre-season to compete for that position.

I had completely forgotten about Will Smith.

I agree about no.7 but the cupboard is so bare, I reckon we may very well see Pringle in the first line up

That's a good idea. Won't need a specialist spinner and arguably Pringle isn't one in any case! Smith could bowl economically and Steel is capable of the occasional magic delivery.

I suppose that if Poynter is no.7 (and I fear he might), then at least Weighell can hold enough of a bat to justify batting at 8, if Pringle doesn't feature.

Not sure when Smith last batted anywhere near the top of the order for Hants. He will certainly have to step up

I think he spent most of the season captaining the Hants second x1, don't know if his form didn't justify a first team place or if they just decided to move on from him.
When he used to play here I thought his ability to bat time and blunt the new ball was very useful regardless of how many runs he scored but those were the days when we had a formidable attack and that's not the case anymore so he will have to score a lot of runs.

He scored profically in the 2nd team championship, as did both Jones and Harte. I'd be more than happy for both Steel and Smith to bat time and blunt the new ball-better than Rockytype run a ball 40s.

Yes, those sort of quick fire 40's are of no use a the top of the order.
