If Poynter plays he must be keeping wicket and that will surely mean he is going start as first choice keeper in the CC.

That doesn't preclude Richardson playing solely as a batsman. One of the seamers will be omitted with either probably Harte or Richardson making way for Markram.
2nds open their programme on Monday v Middlesex. Be interesting to see how they're going to find eleven players. Now where are my whites?...

Agree Captain they must be going to continue with Poynter keeping. I can't really see the point as it looks like Richardson is going to bat at no6 and no higher than no5, last year they where looking to bat him higher up the order so it was fair enough to give Poynter a go. I suppose all it means at the moment is that we don't even entertain playing a slow bowler so can get away with it.
Hopefully Harte gets his chance deserves it after his batting in the 2nds last year and looks like a toss up between Steele and Smith who will open when Markram arrives.

 You best get them ready!

If it was me I'd have Richardson as keeper / batsman and look at the extra batsman Harte. Poynter to me just takes up a spot- one of the seamers would probably score as many runs!

Presume that Smith will open for the uni match and then drop to 3. Steel will surely open and provide a bit of part time spin if required. Probably ssip down tomorrow anyway. I'd like to see Harte get a chance too. Been plenty of talk about Pottsy over the winter, so I imagine one of McCarthy/Weighell will miss out

when did the uni game stop being a first class match?

Surely best to give Harte a taste of first team cricket and give Richardson the gloves, rather than play Poynter. Personally I'd have Richardson keeping anyway - no point in what is already a weak team, weakening it further by selecting an ordinary keeper when you've a keeper/batsman already in the side. (Unless he's refused to keep wicket). Nothing against Poynter - we just don't have the luxury of a specialist keeper batting at 8 or 9.

I think some are FC and others are not. It's something like the first two MCCU games each season are FC and then the rest are friendlies. Looking at Durham MCCU's fixtures and they've already had fixtures against Warwickshire & Middlesex.
I have a vague recollection ( could well be wrong ) that our game last year was also a friendly and we wanted to use more than 11 players during it but were forbidden to do so by FTECB.

I agree, but I suspect Harte will make way for the Kent game

nice to see you back KingOttis

I also agree. If the keeper is going to bat way down the order would it not normally suggest an exceptionally strong batting lineup with at least one top class all rounder in the top 7? When the lineup looks a bit dodgy it seems madness to go in with a keeper who can't bat in the top 7.

perhaps he'll surprise us, like Graham Clark, and suddenly start scoring reliably and plentifully?

He might. I remember a members forum a while back when Lewis was asked about Poynter and JJ said he was backing him to score FC centuries. I'm not sure if Adam Gilchrist would do that if he was batting 8 or so in our team - especially with Rushy slogging away down the order!

usual FTECB clarity and consistency then

At present he probably will but if Harte and Richardson score big in the Univ game?
