I'm trying to imagine what would happen if a side needed 6 off the last ball to draw and there was a 5 run penalty for a wide... the bowler would just throw the ball behind him, wouldn't he?

Very good point! The only way to avoid the scenario would probably be to have a 7 run penalty for the wides or no balls.

Yep. All of these bizarre ideas are obviously about trying to reduce the playing time to fit in with the broadcasters wishes whilst trying to pretend they're into exciting and innovative ideas.

The ECB seem to have this bizarre opinion that all women are like Cinderella, and that after 9pm they turn to pumpkins along with their children if they are at a cricket ground. The Arsenal game tonight, when it panned to the crowd, shows a lot of women and children in attendance..... the game ended at 10pm. If its a second leg, it has the potential to end at 11pm. And how many of these people live directly in and around the ground, and how many have to jump an hour on the tube or head back outside London? Was there a spare ticket going? Nope.

In fact, figures seem to show that 12% of season ticket holders are kids, and 26% are women, when looking at Premier League clubs...... so Id hazard a guess that its hardly a freak occurrence that women and children go to games in the evening. In school term time. On a school night

Another thing is, with 8 teams sucking in bigger geographical areas, if taking the kids and wife before they turn to pumpkins is that important, than how do they factor in the increased travel time for many fans to get to their nearest team?

I mean, to look at it very personally, I could either go to Hove which is round the corner from where I used to live, leave at 21:30 after the game and be home by 21:45.....

Or I could be forced to travel to the Rose Bowl, 70 miles away in Southampton, leave at 2100 hours and not get back once traffic at the ground is factored into the 90 min journey, by what, best case scenario 2300 hours? And that factors in the costs of travel, the effort of travel, the parking costs, the time Id have to leave..... Sussex get good attendances at home, I wonder how many would be willing to make that journey regularly?

Ok, could go London, but to make that journey for the start you are having to hit trains at peak hours, so that is costing what, at least £50-60 for a return pp. And then again, its not saving me time is it.

And after I have travelled to the Rose Bowl, I get to support the Hampshire Hammers or the Southampton Steel or someother shite......

Now call me a miserable whiner, but I dont think I would be alone in suggesting the average Sussex fan would not be seen dead supporting a home team at the Rose Bowl, carrying the name of their historical enemy county or a rival city......

So yeah, what happens when that is replicated over every county?

Sh*t idea. All of it.

Of course, the answer is to call the team "Southern Team Zone"....or some inanely generic rubbish.....

But doesnt matter, because the 100 BALLS countdown will create so much excitement, people wouldnt care, right?

In a nutshell

Similar scenario for Durham fans whose nearest franchise is in Leeds, a relatively long and expensive train ride on the East Coast Mainline. Also 85% of Yorkshire fans wouldn't be seen dead supporting a L**ds named team.

Stressful as it is going to an evening T20 at Headingley these days now Yorkshire are getting 5 figure crowds. Takes me roughly 1hr 10min for a simple 15 mile drive, as I hit rush hour traffic as well as the bottleneck in Kirkstall. Leaving the ground is just as slow unless if you decide to have a post match pint at a pub, which is not ideal on a school night.

not really... Durham fans have just been excluded from the whole competition

probably deemed not worthy enough

Got to get away from this stuff about the counties and their fans. It isn't designed to appeal to them... this a marketing broadcasting deal. If nobody turns up to watch the game it probably won't make or break it financially.

cut out the little, irritating, people who think it's their game and focus entirely on the money and the TV and the advertising.... everything the ECB has ever wanted

with the exception of Tests, Cricket has been very under-supported (in terms of bums on seats) for at least my lifetime. The BBL has changed that around, and that has become self-perpetuating: the crowds have made it much more of an enjoyable tellie experience, and that has helped make it more popular with the paying/travelling fans.

The Aus one-day comp has had decades of poor-ish crowd numbers, and that helps make it less interesting to the average tellie fan - imo, of course, and not being average, I could be wrong here....

According to The Times the ECB is now considering having 50 successive balls bowled from one end then 50 from the other end. All part of the obsession to get the games over in 150 minutes. They were apparently considering ditching lbw as a mode of dismissal but then decided it would be too radical!
