More strange things coming from ECB HQ. Article in The Times says the England players won't feature in the competition " because it would clash with the international calendar." It quotes Daryl Mitchell : " The likes of Root and Stokes will be allocated to a team for marketing purposes but they won't play...The ECB made the point that this new audience won't necessarily know who Stokes and Root are."
Apart from playing this new competition without the best players being available what is the logic for using the ' big names' for marketing purposes whilst also suggesting the target audience won't know who they are?!

It's all very ECB

nothing surprises me any more. The counties do it too, of course........ market internationals with their local international stars who then don't play............ but at least they can claim no prior knowledge of availability

Exactly. This plan seems to be that they know the internationals won't be playing but are using them to market the game to people who don't know who they are in any case!

I thought the idea of "City T20" is for England players to play in a high quality competition, particularly Joe Root who wants to play more Twenty20 and publicly spoke in favour of the 100 ball competition.

The ECB are making it up as they go along, just go back to City T20 and play it in September as an end of season bash without marginalising the County game.

May as well just make it a 6 a side 6 over smash thing like the annual thing in Hong Kong. Games take no time and can easily fit around the international calendar. Lots of bright lights and music. In fact, leave the music on when the action is happening. The short attention span mobile phone obsessed millenial may go for that. The rest of us didn't want to get involved with this farce anyway.

Went to the New York Stadium earlier this evening to watch England and Switzerland U17s in the U17 European Championships.

The 6,200 crowd consisted of Andrew Strauss target audience, young kids and their parents. Half the crowd weren't even interested in the match (albeit it was dull in places). Young mother taking selfies behind me, another mother attending to her restless toddler who was playing/throwing a bunch of keys and crawling all over his seat. Then there were kids blowing hard into their plastic horns and making un-coordinated noise.

Even when England had three good chances to score, the crowd reaction was virtually non-responsive and this is a game of football. A fair amount of the crowd was restless as well so they were coming and going mid-match as they please. Good luck trying to keep unruly people still during an over behind the bowlers arm!

If new audiences are not interested in a simple game of football, the ECB have no chance of 100 ball cricket or even 10 over cricket. Even GG's suggestion of Super 6 cricket might be too much for the goldfish generation.

Unless if they have a genuine interest for the game, fairweather families do not belong in sports stadia. Kew Gardens is a more stimulating place for them rather than Sophia Gardens.

I can't believe the ECB came up with this.

Then again, yes I can.

Do the ECB not like cricket? It's the only reason I can think of them coming up with this.

It's a ridiculous idea. I really don't get it as the t20 sells really well already.

Just put some games on the BBC.

People talk about timings, are they saying a whole saturday of world cup football is too much???

This x100.

Been to T20 on Friday nights in Bristol, Cardiff and the Oval in the last few years and all were sell outs (except maybe Glam, which was still very full). Just play all the games on Saturday / Friday nights and you'll get great crowds. No need to further complicate the format, as non cricket fans find the game complicated enough as is.

According to The Times the latest idea for this competition is to have 15 players on each side so batsmen are substituted with bowlers when the team is in the field! Apparently the theory is to allow as many top players as possible to participate in games unlike in the IPL and Big Bash where big names are often on the bench.
The article says it's just an idea that is being floated rather than something definitely going to happen.

So much for making things simpler for new followers. It could be so complicated that even veteran supporters won't understand it.

I believe they are now floating the idea of having twenty 5 ball overs

If the ECB are bothered about time constraints, why not have a timed format of 1hr per innings (minimum 15 x 6 ball overs) and call the new competition Happy Hour.
