CSA 3-Day Provincial Cup 2018-19

It was one of my New Year's Resolutions to give a little bit more love to some of the more obscure cricket competitions I follow on the forum so will start with this.

Was keeping an eye on the game between 5th placed Easterns and 6th placed Border today.

It will be easterns who will be most pleased after having scored a fairly decent 320 on Day One.

In what has been a fairly lacklustre season for Border, the veteran Phaphama Fojela has been something of a mainstay. He got another five-fer today including 2 in one over to render Easterns 8-2. They then rallied back - largely through a 94 for Matthew Arnold.

In the 11 overs that Border batted they managed to lose two batsmen for the gain of a mere 39 runs and are now quite a way behind.

Whilst a draw seems the most likely outcome, it will be Easterns who feel more pleased with the fixture this week, This despite a stellar 137 ball 123 from Marco Marais.

Easterns hold a 131 run lead with 10 wickets left in their second innings. They will aim to put on another 100-ish asap and declare after lunch, in the hope that they run through the Border batsmen.

In a game that is petering out for a draw you may as well fill your boots and Wesley Marshall did just that. Starting the day on 75*, the 25-year-old settled in for the innings and made his way to a double ton. Easterns declared on 341/3 after Marshall got his 200 in 199 balls.

Border got 146 in their second innings with the total still a long distance away.

In other stand out performances around the country, Marcello Piedt, who has had a great season, doubled up being South Westerns top run scorer in the first innings with 86 batting at 8 and then followed that up with 5-52 in North Wests first essay. South Westerns went on to win by 28 runs.

This round's featured match for those who give a Daryn Smit)....is Free State vs North West.

Free State finished 3rd in Pool A whilst NW finished in the same position in Pool B so it should have been an evenly matched ficture...but you would have needed to have told that to Free State who completely demolished North West's first innings. Only two batsmen got into double figures as the side were dismissed for a T20 score of 122.

The pitch inspectors were primed when Free State feel to 4-1 but Karabo Mogotsi put paid to any dud pitches with a score of 74 to put on a 119 run second wicket partnership. At stumps Free State were 134/3 - a 12 run lead.

After being 134/3, Free State will be disappointed to have capitulated to 220 all out in 20 overs of Day Two - at least it will guarantee us as a result in this fixture. Disappointing though that collapse would be it still handed Free State a 88 run lead on North West.

After a first innings bowling display dominated by Free State but where the wickets were shared equally; the second innings was dominated by J van Dyk who displaced three of the four opening batsmen on the way to stumps figures of 3-61. Wickets continued to fall rapidly as North West were ended the day on 176-6 - 78 runs ahead. I expect a Free State victory on the final day unless a heroic display of tailend batting keeps North West buoyant enough for the draw.

North West made the impossible possible and turned this match round from a dire first innings display and a tepid Day 2 to claim a shock win on Day 3.

Yesterday I said that the tail needed to wag for NW - and wag it did with a further 113 added for the last four wickets. All out with a lead of 191 - the most likely result now seemed a draw but Free State had not accounted for the bowling of 18-year-old Duan Jansen who got absolutely stunning figures of 6-2-9-6. As he completely gutted the Free State batsmen. They were all out for 91 and were denied, what seemed to be, a sure victory. This is Duan's second ever First Class Match. One to watch for sure.

A very decent fixture.

Not much to shout about in this round of fixtures with the exception of Border's captain Hanno Kotze, racking up nearly half of his side's first innings total with 222 off 253 balls. It is the 24-year-old's highest score in First Class cricket.

16 wickets in a day in Port Elizabeth saw the bowlers prevail.

Boland, led by Kyle Simmonds' 7-fer, got Eastern Province all out for 254 - but they themselves were rattled by an early innings failure to see them 110-6 at stumps.

Eastern Province's bowling attack should have enough to see Boland all out before lunch. Boland are winless in the competition this season, with EP in third.

More wickets tumbled on Day Two of this Three Day game. Glenton Stuurman helped rattle Boland out for a mere 150 - giving EP a lead of 104.

Boland' second foray saw them muster 265 - meaning Boland need 358 to win. They lost 2 wickets before stumps.

At the rate this is going this could be over in the second session.

As expected, Boland did not have the firepower to make this competitive.

Hanno Kotze top scored with 45 but Boland were all out for 164 - handing EP a 205 run victory. They now move into second position.

International forgotten man Stephen Cook stood out today with 135 for Gauteng v Boland. The game appears to be heading for a draw.

The game continued to bat itself out to a draw.

Fritz De Beer's 97 was the highlight of the day for Boland.

The star man of today was Qaasim Adams who is currently on 86 not out for Western as they take a 206 run lead over Boland.

It is a return to form for Adams who is returning from a ban from the game for pulling a gun on a team member.

Just as one batsmen held things together yesterday - Boland's Isma-eel Gafieldien's 62* saw his team through to the draw.

Boland are still without a win after having lost 3 games and drawn their other 4.

Two games with lots of wickets and lot of runs caught the eye today.

First off, Lance Humphrey was the hero for Easterns as his 4-44 helped resign KwaZulu-Natal Inland to a score of 186. Easterns already polished off 102 of these for the loss of just two wickets before Stumps on Day One.

in the other game a 136 run partnership spearheaded by Mkhululi Calana saw Border go from 31-3 to 167-4. They were eventually all out for 232 before rendering Border 21-4 in 12 overs of their reply.

Two games where a result is likely.
