Logan Cup 2018-19

Postby The Professor » Sun Jan 20, 2019 8:14 pm

After a hiatus where political violence in Zimbabwe saw games called off, the Logan Cup has swung back into action.

The most intriguing game pits 2nd place Mid West against winless Mountaineers.

Timycen Maruma put together a score of 91 to hold together a lacklustre batting performance for the bottom of the league club - however 236 all out is far from an awful score.

Mid West are 60-2 in reply.

Clearly the Mountaineers were in a rush to get this done.

A 4-Day game was finished in half the time. After being 60-2 overnight it took just 4 more overs for Mid West to suffer a catastrophic collapse to 80 all out. Unsurprisingly, the Mountaineers asked them to follow on where they were skittled out for the second time in a day; this time for a more creditable 171. This left the Moutnaineers just 16 runs to get - a target they met in 8 minutes.

The most prolific bowler for the Mountaineers was William Mashinge who got 1 wicket in the Mid West's first innings but followed it up with five in the second.

There must be something in the water in Zimbabwe as the other fixture between Matebaland and Mashonaland finished within two days also as the latter ran out the winners by 7 wickets in a low-scoring game.

Veteran Mountaineers and Zimbabwe bowler Shingi Masakadza stood out for me today in decimating the Mashonaland batting order twice in a day.

He got 4-31 in their first innings and then got 3 of the four opening batsmen as they were asked to follow on.

He also claimed the first hat trick in Zimbabwean domestic cricket since 2014.

Not as exciting as his colleague's effort of yesterday but Natsai M'shangwe got 2 wickets to round off Mashonaland's followed-on innings with a lead of just 16. The Mountaineers polished this off for the loss of no batsmen. The Mountaineers lead at the top of the table is now stretched to 6 points.

In the other game in the competition, Mid West drew with Matabeleland. Zimbabwe international Peter Moor's performance with the bat was the highlight of the match with a first innings score of 139.

Kinda blinked and missed this tournament.

Mashonaland beat Matebaland in the final today thanks to Tinashe Kamunhukamwe's 73 at the top of the batting order.
