I still have no idea how Wells managed to score more than 8, so 98 really hurts. Despite signs of batting progress, we still haven't managed to stop conceding damaging late order partnerships

Yep. Happens all the time, I think the lack of a really quick bowler or a top class spinner is a factor - when the ball gets older we seem to struggle .

that's where the snarling overseas bowler can come in handy...... or Woody, of course........shoving a few balls up the noses of the tail to hurry them on their way.

I'll be down for the morning session tomorrow

151 from Bancroft as keeper/batsman- more than Poynter usually gets in about 10 innings and Richardson with a hundred.
Now lets see how these bowlers go about defending 342. :scared By our standards it's an amazing score but probably just about par for the course these days in 50 over games.

Excellent performance. I was very worried when Holder and Wakely looked set but then the young bowlers responded so well under pressure. Bancroft looks more than useful as a keeper-took a great one hand catch towards the end.

I saw the Northants reply

On the whole we defended the total with few alarms. The Wakeley/Holder partnership looked ominous for a while.... we struggled to build any pressure and they looked as though the plan was to work the gaps, run hard and punish the bad balls, but without taking risks. It worked for them and it felt as though they were going to get close enough for a mad dash last 10 overs. Even after Wakeley had fallen, the runs required and the run rate required to get them looked tailor made for Holder.

Fortunately both fell playing the same shot. a mis-timed flick down the throat of Jack Burnham who was patrolling the boundary in front of the pavilion from deep square leg to deep mid wicket. Trevaskis, for all he didn't look that threatening, did well to induce both the set batsmen into gifting their wickets away. Once Holder had gone it was all over bar the shouting.

Looked like a stunning take behind the stumps from Bangers to remove Keogh or Proctor (I forget which). Full stretch job and the ball was travelling. He put in a very competent performance with the gloves

I was a bit fearful when the innings started because both Salisbury and Carse really struggled with their early overs. Salisbury started his second over with 5 wides down the leg side, then pulled out of his delivery stride and had to run in again, then got hit for 4 , then bowled a wide. 12 runs off his second over and the batsman hardly had to do a thing. Fortunately he took Cobb's wicket first ball of his third over and he settled down a lot after that.... ended up bowling rather well... so much so that Bancroft kept him on for 8 overs and then brought him back early for his final two when the Wakeley Holder partnership was building

Carse's second over went for 15 with a no ball followed by him hitting off stump on the free hit, with the ball deflecting away to the boundary for 4 byes. He continued to go for plenty in his 3rd over and had to be taken off early.

we gave away 12 extras in those 2 overs and I was a bit worried for a while that we didn't have enough bowling options. We didn't need options in the end, because Northants never really got away from us.

A 70 odd run win will be a confidence booster for the boys, I'm sure..... and after the first couple of CC matches will be much needed. Bangers will be pleased with his own performance today

Agree with all of that. I think when we batted the rate was about 6 an over until the final acceleration and Northants were at 6 for most of the innings with the rate required hovering around 8 so it was looking ominous with those two set comin towards the end. Generally though I thought we were always just about in control - for a change! About the only predictable thing was Bancroft in after the first two overs at 7-2. Probably just as well!

worth mentioning that I have no idea why Burnham was fielding at 3rd slip when he missed catching Wells the other day. His fielding today out on the square leg boundary was very ordinary at best...... yes he took the 2 catches, but they were dollies and he missed saving a couple of boundaries... one of which he misjudged, ran too far and watched the ball bounce over the spot where he'd been standing just a split second before. He dropped quite a few of his warm up catches during the interval and seemed to struggle with the pick up and throw exercises. I confess my heart was in my mouth when Wakeley and then Holder lobbed the ball towards him. I was certain he was going to drop them...... although he didn't. Still.......... he doesn't strike me as being the safest pair of hands for such a crucial fielding position as 3rd slip in a championship match

 Unfortunately not changed in my case! Although we were not sitting in the 'usual' position near the steps.Corkers with interesting info that the pitch for this game and Friday's is an artificial one - it gets cut and rolled but is still artificial being used by the FTECB as an experiment. Assuming the experiment is being repeated around the country it might be a reason why there were a lot of similar(ish) scores in the mid-300's in the first innings of games today. Decent weather and similar pitches.

good info

I'll look more closely on Friday

668 said she saw a sleeping bag in the crowd and wondered if that was corkers

got to be a die hard if you take a sleeping bag to matches. Would make a good protest about the way the CC is being scheduled if it was properly co-ordinated around the country, although it would probably require a lot of research at the library cross checking membership details and telephone numbers from registers, electoral rolls, phone books and such like.......... If only there was some other global medium to organise something like that...... :hmmm

Is it not a "drop in" pitch rather than artificial one if it can be cut and rolled?
