Well it has stopped raining and looks a little brighter. Colly, Wood and Stokes have been out.

As soon as I say that, Short has gone on the attack.

Lord D'Arcy shot down on half way. Depends now if the locals can keep the start going.

A good game that, and encouraging to get off to a good start

POTM, for me has to go to Matty Potts who bowled brilliantly in the PP overs 2-4 off 2 and 3 of the 4 runs he conceded were wides. He single handedly put Northants on the back foot right from the off, which is important I think when defending a smallish total. Imagine then, my amazement when only he or Carse could bowl out (Carse was going at 9 an over), and Poynter went for Carse.... it made the game much tighter than it probably should have been. When Potts came back to bowl the final over Northants only needed 15...eminently do-able, particularly when he found a genuine edge with his first delivery and it flew to the third man boundary..... it all got a bit twitchy, but he held his nerve and bowled 3 singles and 2 dots which included the farcical run out of White. An all round polished performance from him

Rimmer bowled well, Raine started tightly until Rossington ruined his figures with a consecutive 6 and a 4. Trevaskis bowled 2 really good overs before Keogh took him on.

Short got hit on the hand with a straight drive and looked to be in some discomfort, but fortunately was able to carry on. Not his bowling hand.... hopefully he'll be okay. Made a good start for us with bat and ball. He seemed to take his time batting in the PP, but I guess that's fair enough on debut.

For all I'm the first to criticise Poynter, I have to say he did okay tonight (apart from giving Carse the extra over, that is). He brought a bit of urgency to our last few overs when it looked as though we were limping along to a 130 score, and it was a really smart bit of work to dismiss Rossington when he did. It was a poor leg side ball from Short which Rossington tried to deflect behind, but Poynter snapped it up with a fantastic reaction catch. If Northants were going to win, it was going to be Rossington who did it, so his dismissal was pivotal

3 catches for Burnham :o all in the deep in front of the pavilion, and one was a snorter. 668 will be flabbergasted

Clark and Trevaskis were going nowhere when they were batting. Sanderson who had gone for 11 in his first over came back in the 15th, when they were together, and went for 9 off his next 2 overs. they couldn't get the ball away at all. the first shot Clark hit in anger went straight down the throat of the fielder in the deep.

Steel was a bit pedestrian opening and then got out just as it looked as though he was getting going, which was disappointing

someone, I don't know who, dropped 2 catches at crucial moments. One was a difficult catch, but he did get there and spilled it low down, the other was an absolute dolly off Keogh who was just starting to look as though he was going to chase the target down.... huge groan around the ground. Didn't cost us fortunately

felt like we were 20 runs short.... but then I always tend to think that. A team with a Buttler or a Roy or a Finch in it might well have chased that down easily.

We've adopted the big boundary policy, and I think it nobbled Northants a bit, because we were running hard and turning one's into two's, but then we were also really sharp in the field and restricted them to singles, which might very well have been the match defining difference between the two teams

In response to SP's query, it felt like a bigger crowd than usual for T20. Hard to judge the attendance but it felt like an excellent turnout

Excellent report DF thanks. Gate reported as 6100 which on a such a damp night is excellent even allowing for the fact there was free entry for youngsters. A closely contested win will encourage them to return and promises bigger gates in better weather.

Yep. That wobble towards the end to keep Northants in the game going into the last over was ideal in hindsight. Made for an exciting finish won by the home side.
Agree with DFM's comments on Poynter, did well.

6100 feels low... were the kids included?

I always base my estimate on a Yorks FPT derby from a few years ago where the attendance was reported as 8,000. This felt closer to that sort of size

I'd forgotten that the WC heroes were coming to the game, or I'd have made more of an effort to be there in plenty of time.

Were they presented to the crowd?

I hope so........ they deserve it

Yes, Colly was there too and there was an interview with the 3 of them and then Stokes and Wood carried the trophy around the boundary in front of the pavilion.

Martin Emmerson says the pitch for today's game is one of the new experimental pitches containing astroturf.
