Seconded. A shame it didn't work out for him second time around but been a fine servant to the club and the game in general.

Emmerson speculating ( or perhaps he's been told something) that Smith's departure could lead to a new batsman coming in initially on loan.

If that does happen isn't it about time they worked out that the idea is to strengthen the squad/team during the off season and not halfway through.

Last year it was obvious the injury prone bowling attack was far too weak and the inevitable desperate search for loan signings was soon underway.

This year they started with a batting unit with not a single established county batsman( apart from Eckersley in at the last minute)- either inexperienced ones or with pretty ordinary records ( or, in most cases, both inexperienced and with ordinary records ) so even had Smith not gone they'd have had to try and bring someone in in any case. Eckersley is experienced, has a decent FC record and when you see him bat it's clear he's a good county batsman- most of the rest look like walking wickets.

Yep. Think he is held in high regard. The way he dealt with losing the captaincy and then being booted out unfairly suggests he's one of the good guys.
Might be a few more retiring- just not necessarily through choice!

I heard that Smith had a position at Durham University. Head coach at the University vacant after Paul Grayson joined Yorkshire? Likewise, I wish him well -top guy.
Suspect it's budget restrictions that prevent squad strengthening. Perhaps Smith's departure will give us some leeway.
Encouraging match winning knock by Scott Steel in today's semi-final.

Yes. Emmerson mentioned budget constraints and in the final year of our salary cap. It just seems that with all of the big names going there should be scope to get a few quality batters in and still be within the cap. I guess we won't be top if anyone's list though!

Interesting excerpt from the job description for a new finance director at Durham Cricket.,
"DC is now entering a new period of development, both on and off the pitch, underpinned by financial stability and materially increased future revenue streams. Whilst the playing squad is likely to be enhanced, there is also a significant opportunity to develop the ground further, fully capitalising on the commercial opportunity afforded by the site." 1

Sounds interesting. Let's hope " likely to be enhanced" means significantly enhanced!
