He must be very close to getting a late WC call-up, with Hales' drugs ban adding to Roy and Billings' injuries (I appreciate that at this stage, only the last of those three is actually ruled out of the WC).

It would probably relegate us from the Championship, and see us fail to defend our one-day title, mind you.

Thanks for everything Pothas. You'll be missed. My nickname for you was apt and I will never forget it. For the last time, arise Sir Nic.

Wheal is bowling total tosh. Unsurprisingly.

Even before Wood got injured I was really against us dropping Donald for another bowler. Berg and Fuller are too hit and miss to bat at 7. And Markram has shown that he can be a 6th bowler if we ever need one.

But it's been made even worse with us bringing in Wheal. He offers us nothing with the bat or in the field; so when he's only brining one discipline to the table, it needs to be a very effective one (especially when considering that Crane can't bat either). And it simply isn't, he's a poor bowler.

If Wood isn't available next game, we should be recalling Donald for Wheal.

If we're looking for a direct entry into the SFs, then it's good news that Gloucs beat Somerset. If we're looking for a top 3 qualification place, it's bad news that Gloucs beat Somerset. Surrey are going out barring a miracle from their tail, so it looks like 3 from 6.

Listening to Birrell's post match interview, I certainly get the impression that he's questioning whether we've made the right move to play the extra bowler. So that's good to hear.

For me, it's quite simple. One day cricket is about scoring runs, and having wickets available at the back end to score even more runs. So the more batters, the better.

Wood confirms that he'll miss the rest of the one-day competition. That's a blow.

This has to be Vince's best format for making it at international level.

Absolutely. But at the same time, he's on something of a hiding to nothing. That ODI batting line-up is extremely settled (and good) - such that I think Vince has only played something like 6 ODIs in 5 years (and one of them was a total washout). Chances will be extremely limited, so he pretty much has to perform on every occasion presented to him. That's not easy.

Barring injury, you can't see him ever being given a run of, say, eight consecutive matches.

Today could be the last time we see him until the first t20 in mid July.

Yay, we've recalled Donald. Slightly surprised though that it's for Crane (who has been expensive, granted) rather than for Wheal.

We still haven't won a toss this season.

Morkel rested by Surrey (and Batty is ill), which is great for us.

I'd have been underwhelmed at that score before a ball was bowled (it's a poor looking Surrey attack - no Morkel, Curran, Curran, Clarke, Batty and Dernbach). But once Rilee got out and we fell four down, I'd have been very happy to be offered that score.

Great knock again from Dawson.

Good to see that between the top six, they're taking it in turns to make the valuable scores. It's basically two from any six each innings, other than the Essex game (so maybe not a surprise that so far, that Essex game is the only one we've lost).

I don't understand how he gets game time. Barker would have been the obvious, like-for-like, replacement for Wood. Or play Crane or Taylor.

Boy we needed that wicket from Markram.

I was under the impression Barker was only going to play in the Championship.

He would be a far better bet then Wheal as he can bat as well as bowl, Wheal can do neither.
