Alsop and Rilee gave their wickets away, but apart from that Essex's excellent bowling trio - coupled with the conditions - have well and truly bowled us out.

outground cricket..... this is why i don't approve of it. WC, of course, but still........ I hate outgrounds.

supposed to be first class cricket, but outgrounds reduce it to second class cricket.

I'm off to Sedburgh in a fortnight-I'll keep you informed.
1st day is a sellout -mind that's only about 1500 but probably lot more than would have been at O.T.
Been to both Cheltenham and Arundel in recent years and thoroughly enjoyable -certainly both excellent pitches.

Mind you might have something about Harmer and Chelmsford

"Harmer has now taken 35 County Championship wickets this season at a cost of 19.40 each, 24 of them at Chelmsford, where, in 18 matches in just two and a half seasons, he has now gone past 100 first-class wickets".

Puts things back into perspective.

What a horrible defeat.

Innings inside two days and we won the bloody toss and batted!

Looking down instead of up from now on.

I can perhaps see Northeast's logic now in batting first- he reckoned correctly that the pitch wouldn't last. Doubt if you can proportion blame - with this weather groundsmen don't have time to fully prepare a wicket. In these games it only needs one decent partnership to decide the game. Essex found it.

Yeah, whilst we did throw some of our wickets away (maybe five of the 20), the biggest reason for losing that was somehow conceding a 100 partnership to Ravi and Lawrence.

Take away that partnership, add in our lower order having something tangible to fight for today (ie setting an OK score), and we could well have set Essex 120 or 130 to win. Which in the grand scheme of things could well have been a winnable score.

Instead, we lose by an innings at Chelmsford for the third straight year (in all competitions, it has to be our worst ground to play at - we lose every time, even in the one day group stage this year when we won every other game). And Harmer's ridiculous home record continues. Leaders Somerset visit next week...

Only one side gets relegated this season remember. And whilst Warks can rely on Jeetan to probably save them, Notts and Kent don't know one end of the bat to the other.

Is Matt Henry returning to Kent after WC? That could be crucial.

I don't believe they've yet confirmed who will be the overseas player for the back end of the Championship season. Mulder is their overseas player until the end of the current batch of the CC games, up until the start of the t20 competition. Of course that is also when the WC ends, but whether that's coincidental in relation to them then getting Henry (or any WC player), I don't know.

It's the same as what we've done with Rahane.

Interesting isn't it how we get plenty of complaints about Turnton yet none about Chelmsford.

I suppose all the rain in the south east wil have had a knock on effect on pitch preparation, drying out and so on. Turnton? Well they got caught throwing hand grenades onto the pitch in the hours before a match started
