What a game of cricket.

The Rhinos were chasing an unlikely 371 on the final day. Brendan Taylor came in on 108-3 after the two set batsmen were dismissed in the same over. He then scored a 96 ball 81 and was out with 109 still needed and five batsmen to come. When a wicket fell in the next over, it seemed even less likely. A sixth wicket partnership was strung together but was broken in the 80th over with 28 runs needed and just three batsmen. Rhinos then lost two further wickets for the gain of no runs in the next two overs and were 343-7. They started to zone in. It became possible but then they lost their second to last batsmen with just 2 runs needed. 4 breathless balls were played out but the Rhinos charged to a famous victory.

Rhinos move into the second place. In the other match the Rocks beat the Eagles by an innings and 119 runs to extend their lead at the top of the table.

The Rhinos Takudzwanashe Kaitano has the highest runs in the competition with his team mate Mavuta’s 14 wickets being the highest in the competition.

The Rocks vs The Mountaineers sees the top placed club face the bottom - however on Day One the gulf did not seem huge.

The Rocks end the day on 272-9 which is likely to be, by some distance, their lowest first innings score in the competition after registering 321, 471 and 449 previously.

Vincent Masekesa can hold his head up high at claiming 3-71 to help stem that total.

Both games fell out of sync with each other today so flicked between the two.

The Rocks were all out for 292 but then got the Mountaineers all out for 211. That score was actually pretty impressive seeming as they lost their top three for ducks. It made for some fairly slow anodyne cricket from the Mountaineers but they will be fairly impressed with their total. Travor Mutsamba was the star man from the Rocks. He broke apart the only stubborn partnership of the Mountaineers innings with two wickets in one over. Rocks went to stumps on 211.

In the other match the Eagles are well on the way to beating the Tuskers.

The Eagles have put on 334 in their first innings and the Tuskers are still 115 away from that with two batsmen left. Regis Chakabva was the big player for the Eagles success. He was 51* overnight and then swelled his total to 164 – 49.1% of his team’s total.

Tuskers completed their victory over the Eagles with very little fuss in the early hours of the morning. They got their two wickets with very little resistance and end the season with their first win.

The Mountaineers have got a fight on their hands to not go down against the champions tomorrow. Despite a fourfer for Clive Chitumba, the Rocks still put on 325 in their second innings. This means that the Mountaineers, who are winless in this years competition, need to get 398 more runs or bat out the day.

And so the Logan Cup winds up for this season with top beating bottom, despite a spirited fightback from the Mountaineers.

Needing a huge total of 407 to win, the Mountaineers gave it a go (and why wouldn’t they). However regular wickets in two significant bursts during the day held them back. Roy Kaia was destructor-in-chief as he got wickets at the top, in the middle and in the tail to the total.

The Rocks dominated both the run-scoring charts and the most wickets. The above mentioned Roy Kaia was the highest run scorer with 374 across 4 innings. His 133 in the first inning against the Rhinos was his best score. With Sikander Raza injured, it is suggested that Kaia may be called up to the national side for the Pakistan series. Tendai Chisoro’s 18 wickets saw him top the wicket table – his best figures were 4-37 against the Eagles.

Comfortably my second favourite domestic competition after the County Champ.

This tournament has kick started again yesterday with two fixtures.

Perennial under-achievers the Rhinos and the Mountaineers are facing off and it is the horny ones that have the upper hand.

After posting 290 in their first innings, they got the Mountaineers all out for 159 courtesy of a fivefer from Brandon Mavuta. The Rhinos had a chance to bat again before stumps and went for quick accumulation as they got 126 up for the loss of five wickets in 42 overs. A declaration in the morning session will set the Rhinos up nicely.

The Mountaineers have the narrowest of narrow chances to pull off a stunner tomorrow but will need to play expertly.

They needed 316 runs to pull off a surprise victory and after limping to 159 in the first innings it seemed a fait accompli - however they showed a little more fight this time out. They have already surpassed their total and are 103 runs away with three batters remaining. One feels it is all on the shoulders of Tony Munyonga who is 71*. Lose him early in the morning and it could be game over.

This very much did not come to pass - to the extent that the Rhinos ended up taking the mick and throwing in their B string bowlers to have a bash. This saw the unlikely figure of Prince Masvaure bag the final wicket as the Rhinos seized a 67 run victory.

Mashonaland beat the Southern Rocks to claim their own victory within three days. They top the table after their innings and 56 run victory.

It was the final day of the second round of Logan Cup matches today and Matabeleland  and the Southern Rocks really provided us with a thriller. After declaring on 277-8, the Southern Rocks set Matabeleland the notional target of 352 in 65 overs....however this notional target became much more realistic as the Tuskers began smashing the ball around with ferocity.

In the end it was all for naught but they got to within a hundred runs for just the loss of four runs.

Richmond Mutumbami's first innings 196 ball 156 was probably the best performance of the match.

Mashonaland beat the Mid West Rhinos in the other game meaning they top the table with two wins from two.

Mashonaland's Kudzai Maunze is the highest run scorer so far with 261 whilst the Mid West's Brandon Mavita has 13 wickets - the highest in the competition.

This week's game of choice pits third placed Matabeleland against second placed Mid West Rhinos.

At the end of Day One it is the Rhinos who have their noses in front after posting 229 and getting out one of Matabeleland's batters out in the 4 overs before stumps.

Ainsley Ndlovu, who had a decent first game last week, got a threefer for Matabeleland but a combined effort from the Rhinos saw them post a decent total. The Rhinos will be hoping that they can get over the loss of their opener to get close to parity on Day Two.

It was Milton Shumba who forced Matabeleland's agenda. His 90 held a faltering middle order together before a seventh wicket of 107 saw the Tuskers through the day. They go to stumps on 361-9, a lead of 132.

It is looking like a century from Takudzwanashe Kaitano will not be enough for the Mid West to see out this match. They have a lead of just 147 runs with two wickets left as we head into the final day.

Kaitano's 105 is his maiden first class century.

The Mid West put up a valiant effort but it was not to be. They were 281 overnight with just 2 more wickets left but managed to extend their second innings total to a creditable 342, however a target of 209 was never enough for Matabeleland who polished it off easily; Craig Ervine’s half century paving the way to victory.

The Mountaineers beat Mashonaland in the other game – however the Eagles still hold top spot whilst Matabeleland move into second.

Maunze and Mavuta still hold the most runs and wickets in the tournament respectively with the Mashonaland player on 296 and the Mid West bowler on 18 wickets.

There is a top of the table tussle in the Logan Cup this week as Mashonaland take on Matabeleland.

Matabeleland won the toss and chose to bowl and they would have been very pleased with their choices if it weren't for a huge century from Tinotenda Mutombodzi. The 30 year old got 127 off 157 balls and helped Mashonaland to 287-6. That looks a fairly dominant lead and Matabeleland will be hoping to get the last 4 out for a not a lot to stand any chance.

Mashonaland put on another 42 runs and closed on 329 however Matabeleland are in the ascendancy on day two thanks to an inspire Craig Ervine performance. His score of 121* has seen the Tuskers to 229-4 at stumps. The batsmen either side of Ervine were out for ducks but the veteran has looked unflappable regardless of what the Eagles threw at him. Odds on him beating his previous First Class HS of 215?
