Pro50 Championship

Fresh off the back of the T20 franchise series, the Zimbabweans kicked off their 50 over competition on Sunday.

Not that Matabeleland got that message. The winners of the T20 competition have failed to convert their success into a longer format and were out for 132 in 34 overs today. The Rocks only needed 15 overs to overcome that. Tendai Chisoro continued his fine form from the T20 Comp with four wickets.

By the time that game had reached a conclusion the other game had reached it's half way point. Mashonaland had reached 231 off the back of a century from relative newcomer Brad Evans. The Mountaineers were in with a sniff throughout but ran out of batsmen and handed Mashonaland the win.

The table is very even as no team who has played twice as won both games - the Mountaineers have lost both games.

Brad Evans tops the embryonic run scoring table with 122 whilst Victor Nyauchi has 6 runs at 11 for the Mountaineers.

Brian Chari got 61 at a slow strike rate but managed to get Tuskers over the line against the Rhinos.

It was a tight run thing as the Rhinos, who were undefeated going in to this round of games however Tuskers got there off the last ball.

The Rocks beat the Mountaineers in the other game to go secind

Milton Shumba of the Tuskers is the top run scorer with 146. Victor Nyauchi had the most wickets with his 9 for the Tuskers.

The final round of games in the group stage played out today with the Rocks and the Rhinos both winning to get through to the final.

The Rocks will be favourites having finished top of the table and absolutely destroying the Eagles today. Brian Mudzinganyama put in a stunning all round performance. First getting 4-18 and holding the Eagles to 170 and then following it up with 66 off 48 as they chased it down in 25 overs.

The Rhinos made equally light work of the Mountaineers, who finish the competition without a win. They put on a huge 335-6, the highest total of the tournament. The Mountaineers didn't get even half way to that and were all out for 153. It was a team effort for the Rhinos with 5 batsmen getting 40 runs or over. The bowling of Brandon Mavuta (5-37) was not too shabby either.

The Rocks' Cephas Zhuwao is the competition's highest scorer with 150. Victor Nyauchi is still the best wicket taker.

Takudzwanashe Kaitano has finished a fine domestic season for the Rhinos with a century to win them the Pro50 competition. His 118 ball 122 made up a big chunk of Rhinos total of 297. In the chase, the Rocks gave it a good shot but ran out of batsmen 47 runs short.

Kaitano finishes as the highest run scorer with John Nyumbu of Matebeleland taking the most wickets with 11.

The first day of the Pro50 Chanpionship today.

There was a game dominated by bowling and a game dominated by batting.

First off was the battle between Matabeleland and Mashonaland where the former were out for a fairly dismal 106 thanks to Richard Ngarva 3-14. Very little effort was needed for Mashonaland to polish that off.

The match between the Southern Rocks and the Mid West Rhinos was more batter friendly until the rain intervened. Tadiwanashe Marumani top scored with 65 but it was a real team effort as the Rocks got to 214. Thunderbolts and lightning intervened a number of times which saw the DLS score a change a number of times however somehow the Rhinos ran out Winners.

New Kent signing Ben Compton put on a century for the Mountaineers as they beat the Mid West Rhinos in embarrassing fashion. The Rhinos charged off on a chase of 363 and found themselves all out for not even half that - 177.

The Southern Rocks beat Matabeleland in the other match. to stretch their lead at the top of the table.

Mashonalnd's Regis Chakabva (162 in 2 games) and Mid West Rhinos' Tashinga Musekiwa (6 wickets @ 5.73) are the most impressive in each discipline.

After a sabbatical this competitom has returned to see us through the festive period.

Last year Takudzwanashe Kaitano  was the star for the Rhinos as they won the competition, he is still thr Rhinos' top player but they aren't delivering on the pitch.

He scored 73 at the top of the order as the Rhinos got to 261 however Mashonaland looked in no trouble getting that in 42 overs.

The Southern Rocks beat the Mountaineers in the other game to continue their unbeaten spell.
Mashonaland move into third whilst Rhinos are winless and bottom.

Sean Williams all round prowess sees him as the top runscorer with 209 runs and the highest wicket taker with 13. A great asset for Matabeleland.

Two rounds of the Pro50 championship have been played in Zimbabwe with 4 of the 5 teams playing twice – whilst Mountaineers (weirdly) have not played at all.

Matabeleland have hit the ground running with two wins from two games with Southern Rocks in second courtesy of one massive win against the Mid West Rhinos where they chased down 276 with 27 balls remaining and 4 wickets in hand. The Southern Rocks also boast the tournament’s highest run scorer at this early stage. Cephas Zhuwao has been the tournament’s nearly man – first falling one short of his century and then, today, falling two short of a half century. His 147 is 13 more runs than Mashonaland’s Tadiwanashe Marumani who scored a century today in his sides losing effort to Matabeleland.

The tournament’s best bowler is Sheunopa Musekwa whose 7 wickets for Matabeleland puts him two clear of a group of four bowlers with five wickets. The best match tally so far is Tapiwa Mufudza who got 4-26 in Mashonaland’s first round loss to Matabeleland.

Matches continue on Friday.

As their international brethren are doing their country proud, the domestic season trundles on and it's proving to be a confusing one with every team having something to crow about.

Matabeleland were running away with it after the first 4 fixtures but have subsequently lost the last two. They currently hold top spot but are only two points off Mid West Rhinos in seconds. They also boast the finest individual performance with the willow, Irishman Shane Getkate's 120 against winless Southern Rocks is the highest score and one of only two hundreds so far. When you look at the overall highest run scorers it is the rock bottom Southern Rocks who possess the highest run score. Cephos Zhuwao has 315 @45.

One place above the Rocks is Mashonaland who registered the tournament's most comprehensive victory against the whipping boys the Southern Rocks. Set a decent total of 215, Mashonaland chased it down in just 34.5 overs for only their second win in 6.

To complete the full house of the team's - Tanaka Chivanga got tournament best figures for Mashonaland in nail biter against Mid West Rhinos today. His 6-31 was not enough for the Eagles to claim the win but he will be pleased with the second sixfer of the tournament. The Rhinos have the best bowler with Brandon Mavuta's 16 @ 18.15 leading the way.

Today’s most interesting game, lamentably, did not reach a natural conclusion – however there is still a lot to right about.

Second to bottom placed Mid West Rhinos, won the toss and inserted second to top place Mashonaland.
As has been the case for the majority of the season, Tadiwanashe Marumani was the main man for Mashonaland whilst, as had been the case for the majority of the season, Brandon Mavuta has caused headaches for batters. Whilst Marumani’s 79 off 62 balls may have been impressive, it does not hold a candle to Mavuta’s 7-41. All-in-all Mashonaland’s total of 211 seemed a little underbaked, however the Mid West were under the pump. After a first wicket partnership of 39, the Rhinos lost a wicket in obers 12 and 13 and were soon 67-4 and then 86-5. When rain struck Kwekwe, the Rhinos were 95-5 and well behind the required total. Despite the victory, Mashonaland do not move places in the table at all thanks to Mountaineers victory over Southern Rocks.

The two stars of the day top the run scoring and wicket taking tables respectively. Marumani has overtaken Rocks’ Cephas Zhuwao to top spot for runs with 345 @ 57.50. Mavuta was already leading the wicket taking tally and now has 7 wickets between him and his nearest rival.

Today was the final of this competition. The last time we touched base on it – and in that time, through a confluence of events, Mid West Rhinos, who were second to bottom, managed to rise to the top of the table. They found themselves thrust into the final against the Mountaineers today. 70 from Mountaineers’ Definate Mawadzi took them to 277-7. In reply, the Rhinos looked in real bother at 209-7 but took it down to needing just 12 runs in the last over and 2 off the final ball – however they fell short with a dot off that last ball.
The two excellent players of the tournament were Tadiwanashe Marumani and Brandon Mavuta. Marumani got 428 runs for Mashonaland at an average of 47.55. Interestingly Mashonaland boasted 6 of the top 10 overall highest individual scores in the tournament despite the fact they ended up losing the same amount of games they won. Their season is characterised by the fact that the tournament’s highest individual score was 155* by Mashonaland’s Chiamu Chibhabha…in a game that they went on to lose.

Brandan Mavuta led the way from the off in terms of wickets and ended with 28 @ 13.39 – 10 more than anyone else. His tournament best figures of 7-41 against Mashonaland a fortnight ago did no harm to these impressive numbers.

Domestically, eyes will now turn to the Logan Cup which starts on the 22nd.
