Yes that seems an odd one. Can't imagine a test against Ireland pulling the crowds in so unless there's some sort of arrangement where there's no financial risk in staging it I can't imagine why anyone would want it.

I don't think the ECB sell them anymore. I suspect it's a profit or loss sharing arrangement now, although I couldn't be certain about that

That rings a bell, I think you're right - there was some change to make it less risky for counties to stage games.

Yes, that's my reading of the situation. Regular test staging venues are in a win win situation. They even get a financial retainer in seasons when they don't stage a test match.

Maddinson has been confirmed. He comes over after the ODI series with SL which ends on Friday. He is available for CC and OD cup. As far as I know he is with us to the end of the season

except to say that Australia have 2 back to back ODI series from the end of August, so if he gets the call he may leave before the final 4 CC games in Sept..... which is part of the trouble when looking to sign overseas internationals. Far better to have a Bedingham or a Hogan or a Harmer on the books than play the mix and match game

He's had a very modest tour with Australia A so I'd imagine he's a mile away from the senior team. Why we require a 2nd overseas for RL50 which is intended to be a development competition is a mystery only North can explain.

Amazing how he started the season as someone we probably regarded as more of a white ball player. Don't think we'll be seeing much of him in a Durham shirt.

No

good luck to him though. He's looked very much at home at test level

Carse will be away next. I thought Overton did really well batting at 8, but I've been much less certain about him bowling first change. I can see Carse coming into the test side later in the year.

we talk about having a paper thin squad...... we have 16 senior players, not including overseas players. That 16 includes Mark Wood who won't play for us, Ben Stokes who will hardly ever play for us, Jones who is just starting out and Drissell who we know pretty much nothing about. Take Lees, Potts away for the tests and Carse to the ODI set up and we're down to having to sign loanees because Dickson is out injured

ridiculous really

Exactly. Lots of promising signs last season but it was also clear that the squad was too thin. Carse impressed in the ODI'S and was clearly likely to have further opportunities with England and Lees in Australia captaining the A side during the Ashes meant he was highly likely to get the England call too. I was amazed when we didn't strengthen the squad given all that.

The consensus seems to be that England are eyeing him up for the Pakistan tour where cranking up the pace and banging the ball in hard will be important.
