Seems to be a lot more help for the bowlers on this surface so the decision to bowl wasn't as outrageous as I initially thought. Question now is - will it behave this way throughout the match or flatten out?

nearly a calamitous run out just before lunch. Guest wanted 2, but duPlooy wasn't looking and both batters ended up at the same end. duPlooy didn't look to have a prayer of making his ground, but the ball seemed to take an age to get to the keeper and he just squeaked home..... he had to run the whole 22 yards to beat the throw from the rope... astonishing really. Guest was put down on 4 or 5, so neither of these two should still be there. Almost certainly no chance of these two punishing us for all these missed chances

Derbys batters have been poor this morning. Only duPlooy has shown any authority at all. How Guest is still there is beyond me. He's spent an hour and 45 minutes scratching around, being beaten all ends up by every bowler... he's been dropped, had an edge fall just short of slip and a top edge loop up and drop safe between 2 fielders. Pretty much every run he's scored has been edged and he's played and missed a couple of times in virtually every over. Clearly the force is with him

someone being completely ignored by the force is Matt Salisbury. I've lost count of the number of times he's beaten the bat, he's had edges fall short, had a chance put down and 9 of the 20 runs conceded in his first 8 overs came off misfields that ended up going for 3 instead of 0 and 4 came off a genuine edge to third man. Only in his last over did he get punished for overpitching a bit to du Plooy. He'll feel that they isn't any justice in the world. Most of the time he bowled really well

85-5 is a much better reflection of how we've bowled than 85-3 at lunch was

The lad Mackintosh looked very tidy behind the stumps this morning, btw..... lets hope he can bat too or else we'll be into our tail after 5 wickets fall

McAlindon did okay. of his 14 runs, 2 were a no ball off his first delivery, there was a four in his second, a four in his third and (another) 3 run misfield in his 4th plus a single. He looked pretty accurate most of the time. there were only 4 scoring shots in his first 4 overs and there should have only been 3

I've seen a replay of the run out chance and the fielder threw to the keepers end, which had to be collected by Trev and thrown to the bowlers end. That's why it took so long to get there

first ball lasted an hour and a half before it had to be changed. This one has lasted an hour and a quarter

one of the things that struck me this morning was that we were 3 overs short of the 32, but there was a 5 minute drinks break and a 3 minute ball change break, so that's pretty much the time needed to bowl the 32. We were taking between 3 and 4 minutes an over, which is reasonable, so I'm not sure what more we could have done to keep up with the over rate

I was very surprised to find that we'd won the toss, tbh. I just assumed that we'd lost it

not quite sure what the thinking behind that was on a baking hot day. part of me wonders whether Stokesy has been on the phone asking for us to get Leesy some more practice batting last on a wearing pitch. My guess is that had Derbys won the toss, they'd have chosen to bat

not sure this revolving door of replacement balls helps us much either

only Durham and Notts won the toss and decided to field today. Everyone else chose to bat

Notts are closing in with a new ball due to take the last 2 wickets

there's duPlooy's first hundred of the season..... quelle surprise!

I thought it was a very odd decision to bowl but at 80 odd for 5 it seemed fair enough, definitely more assistance than the usual pitches. A 150 stand thought
New ball taken and Rushworth on a hat-trick!
