Other thing is that I doubt anyone would have expected Potts and Dickson to have such success in the CC games, whereas we knew Lees was the next cab off the rank for England openers and that Carse was in the same situation as a bowler.

we get a week off now

Harmy was bashing on at the start of the season about how Durham would improve in the CC once Potts and Carse were bowling in tandem.... but that hasn't happened, of course. He seems to have given up on us being in the mix for promotion now

all rather disappointing

ha.... wait until the Silly takes Raine and Bedingham away from us and Dickson gets awarded a wild card.... how good will our 50 over side look then?

If we can hang onto Sowter we won't have to bowl 10 overs of Borthwick, so hopefully that'll save us having to chase an extra 50 or 60 runs every game

Started well again! :horse
According to Martin Emmerson our worst T20 campaign was 2017 with 10 defeats. We're on track to equal it - lost 8 so far and this is the penultimate game.

I'm confident that our lead high performance coach can lead us to that ignominious landmark.

and you don't have know anything about cricket to understand why we lose matches

our innings.... 4.1 overs.... 28-1

their innings... 4.2 overs.... 53-1

No matter what we do in the field, and there are so many things wrong there, we are just ssiping in the wind, because we are losing matches batting in the power play.... or in our case the limp play

Yes, just a lack of quality throughout. We're going to need at least 3 or 4 quality signings for next season. The only thing that makes me have a modicum of sympathy for North and Franklin is that they surely must have felt the need to strengthen the squad for this season- either the money wasn't there or the players weren't available.

at least the way Durham play tells us everything we need to know about the pitches they play on. If we score 180, it's almost certainly a 200+ pitch. If we score 150, it's surely a 180 pitch

I doubt Turner will be busting a gut to come back next year. We also need to decide what to do with Sowter. He's been flogged around a bit at times, but he seems able to take wickets. I suppose it all depends on how much money he wants, but given the difficulties we have taking second innings wickets in the CC because of a lack of leg spin options (I refuse to acknowledge Capt Beaky as a leg spin option) he might be worth a punt, at least in the short term.

Yes, I think he is definitely worth retaining.

Well every time I hear Bostock talking he seems to be saying that the finances are pretty sound again, so I doubt it's a lack of money

Personally I don't think we target players wisely. We seem incapable of looking ahead to see what we are likely to need at different times in the season, so we leave things to the last minute and try and nail down whoever happens to be available at any particular time without regard to what we actually need. Overseas players always seem to be announced days before the start of the season or just after some sort of crisis. Reactive rather than proactive. Although this isn't terribly new, of course, rather it seems to have been the story of Durham since the dawn of the JJB era. We have signed some very good overseas players in that time, but we haven't been signing them with a view to enhancing the playing squad and helping to develop our young players, we've been signing them to make up the numbers because the squad is so small. I don't think we're alone in this, btw

Nothing typifies that more than the signing of Maddinson. He'll take up the place of a youngsters in what is intended to be a development competition and in the final CC games it should have been obvious that a quality bowler should have been the priority over an unproven batter.
Forethought and planning appears to be totally absent.

I'm a bit conflicted over the signing of Maddinson.

From a CC perspective, on the surface it appears to make absolutely no sense at all. We are scoring runs already, but the bowling is toothless. But I have no idea how long Dicko is out for and if Sowter was to play in the CC for us, we might be just a little less toothless, plus I think Maddinson turns his arm over too from time to time. Having said that, the first half of the season has pretty much put paid to any promotion hopes we may have had back in April, so I can see merit in an argument that asks what the point of throwing money at another overseas batter is. There could be 3 sides going up again and we'd probably still miss out, we are that far behind

But I can understand why they'd bring him in for the 50 over cup. We had a good run last year and I'm sure they'd like to try and go one better this year. A trophy is still a trophy and like last year I believe our haplessness in T20 cricket puts us in a very good position to go deep into the 50 over comp. Maddinson is, I believe, a very good 50 over player..... the kind of expansive batsman that we have really missed in the Dribble since Clark's form went walkabout after about match 3. Of course if we are as useless in the 50 as we have been in the 20, then we might as well save his wages and all go to bed until April 2023

193, which means it's probably a 250 pitch

Derbys are rollicking along at over 10 an over helped in large part by the 14 extras that we've handed them in 8 overs

It's a batting lineup incapable of making above par scores and a bowling lineup incapable of defending par scores.
