Todd Murphy signed for the first seven Championship games. Very good move.

Typical, revealed in a national newspaper, and not,as yet,a squeak from the club.

I always imagined that we would sign a seamer as our other overseas, so signing a spinner is a surprise. I have no doubt whatsoever that we will have been swayed by some pecuniary sweetners, but if the pitch plays as it did last year it will probably be useful to have an international spin bowler in the side, even if he is relatively inexperienced

Agreed on all counts. Most county batsmen seem to struggle against spin- or maybe I'm assuming they're as bad against it as our lot!- so in theory he could be a very handy addition.

A good spinner has been on most of our wish lists for a few seasons, but is it wise to finally sign one to start in April? It does have "classic Durham" written all over it - surely a seamer for the early season, then a spinner for later? Still, think positive....
Also, I'm hopeful that the two Dutch signings will be decent additions, but is that really the limit of our ambition? We've lost our record wicket taker and a high scoring batsman from last year. Are we just ignoring these losses? I (foolishly it seems) believed that after these unexpected departures, we'd re-invest in the squad. Instead, there's been another winter of inactivity with presumably no further strengthening. As usual, I've got my fingers crossed, but it doesn't inspire confidence.

I'm trying to KO. I think back to last year and I have a feeling we kept getting ourselves into decent positions with the ball only to let it all slip by being completely unable to bowl out the tail until the new ball arrived. A spinner might help us to change that.

but yes..... it does seem odd, but then I think Australia have offered us various sweetners as an incentive. I think they are paying Murphy's travel and accomodation costs, for instance.

I await the results with interest. We do need a spinner.... we've always needed a spinner, so I'm not going to complain now that we've signed one. Can he be our Simon Harmer, though and win us matches on his own? It's a big ask

Yes, these signings look handy but there aren't enough of them given the gaps in the squad. I was hopeful that the signing of Robinson- a very good move- would be the first of at least 2 or 3 similar domestic signings.
I'm not confident about this season- we would have needed to strengthen the squad even if Rushy & Dickson hadn't departed for pastures new but we haven't even replaced them.

Tristan Stubbs signed for the Blast. Very good signing imo- cricinfo mentioned he was the most expensive player in the SA20 tournament....although he didn't get many runs!
Was part of the winning team as was Brydon Carse

Absolutely agree. The frustrating thing is that there is talent, and with a couple of decent additions we could do well I think, but every season we're two or three players behind what's needed, with the result that seasons keep drifting by.
