"One of the impacts of Smith's retirement is that he will now be able to play for Surrey as a non-overseas player due to his Irish citizenship. The first year of his deal was cut short by his need for ankle surgery. When he signed his contract with Surrey there were suggestions at the time that he could end his South Africa career there and then."

There's some confusion about his status-some say he could play from this season as non-overseas p, others say he would have to wait until 2015.
I'm sure you will like this footman-Alec Stewart was asked if he would sign an( other) overseas player in the event of Smith playing as an Irish citizen and Stewie said he had to be very careful not to exceed the salary cap! Went on about all counties having to abide by the same rules.

"Surrey have strengthened their bowling attack ahead of the new season by signing the West Indian pace bowler Ravi Rampaul on a two-year deal. Rampaul, 31, who has played 18 Tests, 92 ODIs, will ease Surrey's worries about the strength of their pace resources on their return to the First Division after an injury to Jade Dernbach exposed a squad that has lost Chris Tremlett and Tin Linley from last season."

Notice "Surrey have benefited from the London weighting this season". Wonder how big that is?
Smith is eligible because of a Irish passport through his wife- isn't he now divorced or at least separated?

Once read an article a while back that Surrey's annual wage bill was bigger than Derbyshire CCC's turnover. Given that parts of Kent and Essex are in the Greater London area, do they benefit from the same rule?

Either way it's a rule which Surrey have exploited for their personal gain rather than the benefit of English cricket. With 12 other pace bowlers on Surrey's playing staff, the signing of Rampaul is a luxury rather than a necessity.
"Stats are there to be broken" Dominic Cork
"They took all our players away, banned our captain and we still came away with a ten-wicket victory" Jason Gillespie
"You won't get anywhere slouching about half out of bed" Geoffrey Boycott

Could have used Rampaul at Essex!!! No need for him to join Surrey, where he probably wont even play!
