Black football managers

One of the few black football managers in the English game, Keith Alexander, has sadly passed away at the age of just 53....

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 547410.stm

He was currently the manager of Macclesfield, but also managed Barnet and Petersfield in the past.
:(
He was a former player at Barnet, a team I used to watch when I lived in Edgware....

A true gentleman i remember him from his time at lincoln (not far from my home) and he did some good things there but just missed out on promotion several times in the playoffs. A sad day for the english game

It's such a shame when someone dies while they are still active in the game.

RIP. Sad news. :(

A huge ambassador for kick out racism...never really saw much of him, but he was a true football man through and through, and its a dreadful shame that he past away at such a young age...Condolences to his family, friends, and his Club...well done for carrying on in such dreadful circumstances...RIP...

Black Premiership managers

Postby mikesiva » Mon Nov 01, 2010 12:11 pm

this makes for an interesting read....

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010 ... l-managers

"The number of black managers in English professional football has doubled – to a grand total of two – after it was announced on Thursday that Paul Ince would be taking over at Notts County. With Chris Hughton in charge at Newcastle, that is two out of 92 clubs in the four top divisions who currently employ a non?white manager to steer their team. The appalling figures highlight the disparity between the percentage of black players on the pitch – about a quarter at the last survey – and the paucity of black faces in the dugout. While racist chants have almost disappeared at football grounds in this country, discrimination lives on unchallenged in the boardrooms."

Be interesting how many black players, past or present have gone on to get coaching badges and hold coaching positions because I reckon the intake is low. Viv Anderson was assistant at Middlesbrough in the 90s and did well, Chris Kamara won promotion with Bradford in 96 as manager and consolidated in the First Division.

Chairmen in the modern game look for the instant promotion route and appoint managers who have achieved some form of success, at the end of the day theres 92 league clubs chasing 10 promotion places.

Interesting thoughts from Chris Powell

Where he says that it's up to the individual to apply, I completely agree.
